Statistics

Statistics

A Chapter by Ahmad Cox

There are people in this world who are dying today.
Statistics somehow make it ok
Well it's only 18% of the population that are affected.
It's not that big of a deal.
There are people around the world in poverty
Who don't have enough to eat
There are people around this world who have the means to help those people
There are those who have more than they can take
And yet we still just see them as  statistics instead of seeing the souls of the people who are struggling
We wonder why there is so much fighting and so much war
We wonder why people are so bitter and why they have so much hate
If you only see them as another statistic
Another wayward soul
Another person lost to the system
Lost to the cold
Lost to the world
You will never have the empathy to see or to feel
People's joys
People's pains
Seeing people for who they are
Until everyone is free of hunger
Until there is no more suffering from war and poverty and disease
Until not one person ever has to worry about not being able to feed their families
Until everyone is represented equally under the sun
No amount of statistics will make it better
No amount of statistics or analysis will ease the pain of the world
Soon we will all become statistics
Cogs in an ever more destructive  and faulty machine
Just numbers to be forgotten when we are gone.
Tossed aside
Rejected
I am nobody's statistic
I am a human being
We are nobody's statistic
We each have our own lives
Our own humanities
We all have something to offer
So if anyone ever tries to classify you
Restrict you
Or just see you as another statistic in their game
Just let them know I am nobody's statistic
I am a human being
I have the right to exist as a choose
And the right to live and love and cry just the same as you.
