A lone warrior

A lone warrior

A Story by Afrodestinyfan

A short fantasy story I had written almost seven years ago.

"
The brave warrior stood there, watching at what would seem the be one of the last things he would see in his life. A grim smile appeared on his face. He had always wanted to die in battle and he knew that he would fight until the end, but even a warrior like him gets discouraged at a sight like the one he was facing. He had been studying both swords and magic and there was no one in the world who was better at using both of these skills in battle. People said that he was truly worth of the name ‘Magic Swordsman’ which was a title which only a handful of people had.

The people had said him that it was a quest that would be doomed to fail, but still he had taken on the quest the king had asked him to take. He had been a fool to believe the words of that king. That king of his probably thought that he was more of a threath to him than the hordes of monsters the warrior was facing right now.

Before him were what seemed a million of monsters. He had traveled to the lands to what was the home of these monsters. From time till time until the monsters had run out of food, they would invade his kingdom looking for food. Of course, the monsters also ate humans, so warriors like him would stand up to those monsters and defeat them. After the monsters were defeated and realized that the cost was too great for them in order to require the food they longed for, they would retreat and live on whatever would be eatable for them. Each year the same thing happened and no matter how many monsters they slayed, they always kept coming back. In order to break this cycle his king had requested him and several other warriors and mages throughout the whole kingdom to travel to the home of the monsters and to kill each and every one of them. Only he had been stupid enough to take on this quest. That was not only because he was a fool, but also because he knew how grave the problem was. All of the others thought that it was only a small problem and that their efforts should be put into something more useful.

As the warrior had been standing he hadn’t been doing nothing at all. He had been casting several magical shields around him, had given his twohanded sword the power of lightning and had precasted several offensive spells so that he could cast them in a matter of seconds instead in a matter of minutes. In the middle of a battle you didn’t have time to cast a spell and hope that you wouldn’t get attacked. Of course he was able to cast simple offensive spells while he was fighting with his sword, but those only served to unbalance the enemy so that he could finish that foe of with his sword. Casting major spells while standing outside of the battle was the job of mages.

When he was finished with those preparations he began casting a wide offensive area spell that would land in the middle of the endless ocean of monsters. The monsters had thought until now that he was a lost warrior or someone who they would eat as seem as he would cause problems. This spell would get the attention of the monsters and let them realize that he was a serious threath to them.

He unleashed the spell and it had the exact desired effect he had hoped it would have. He took on a battle stance and releashed his first precasted spells when the first monsters were about ten metres away from him. A wave of fireballs fell from the sky and bombarded the first wave of monsters. The warrior began casting a spell that would create an enlargment of his sword that would last for ten minutes. His sword wouldn’t get larger, but rather than that the lightning that was around his sword would take the form of his sword and would enlarge until it would be five times bigger than the sword itself, this way the range of his sword would increase enormously without making the sword heavier. It was the first time he had used a tactic like this, because normally if he would swing the sword around he wouldn’t only hit the monsters, but also his comrades who were fighting alongside him. Nevertheless, this time he was alone and he wouldn’t have to focus whether or not he would hurt or kill his allies. In this kind of situation he was the most dangerous. In the last battle of his life he would be able to fight to his fullest.

When the first monsters appeared before him that monsters had already been sliced into two by the lightning enlarged sword. The warrior then started swinged around him like crazy so that the monsters wouldn’t be able to surround him. Eventually the spell wore off and the monsters were able to surround him. The warrior then released his second and third precasted spells. The ground around him began to shake and the warrior struck his sword in the ground in order to hold his balance. Then the warrior was lifted into the air by a pillar of earth that seemed to come out of the ground. Now the warrior was standing on top of a small island that was unreachable for the monsters. Soon after that sharp stakes came out of the ground and pierced the monsters in a range of twinty metres that were standing around the island.

The warrior was already tired, but his plan was preceeding exactly like he planned. He then started to cast a spell that would drain him of his remaining magical power. While the warrior was preparing his spell the monsters were bringing forth the monsters that could shoot arrows. Most of the monsters fought with their bare hands, but some of them had learned to shoot arrows from a bow. Of course, they had stolen the bows and the arrows from the humans and the bows were actually too small for them. The monsters that could use the bows were called crazy, but only in situations like these all of the monsters were glad these crazy obsessed monsters existed. By the time the archers were ready to shoot at their enemy, the warrior had finished casting his spell. Some monsters had tried to climb the island, but as soon as they were almost on it, their throats were cut by the massive sword of the warrior.

The warrior finally casted his spell. A huge lightningbolt fell from the sky and fell into a huge pack of monsters. Until now only a small part of the monsters had been fighting the warrior, because he was alone and not that many monsters could surround the warrior and actually fight him, but now that the lightningbolt had struck the monsters and had caused massive damage that the area and killed all of the monsters that were within the range of the explosion that the spell had caused, the monsters all became blind with rage and all stormed at the tiny island that was in their land. They even started to fight among themselves in order to get to the warrior first. The island of solic earth and stone was rammed down by the monsters and the warrior fell down into the remaining ocean of monsters that was left. The warrior was from that point on really forced to fight for his life. He cut down as many monsters as he could and he used all of the other spells he had precasted, which was a list of nearly one hundred spells. The warrior fought and fought and fought with all of his might, but there were too many monsters and after hours of fighting the warrior was finally overwhelmed by the monsters. They hadn’t killed him, but had knocked him unconsious and were planning to torture him to dead so that he would pay for the lives he had taken.

If an outsider had also dared to come and see the fight of the warrior, he would understand why that warrior was only one of the few people in the world who had received the title ‘Magic Swordsman’ and why he was the strongest one of them all.

When the warrior woke up, the monsters had already started torturing him. Most of his bones were broken and he was bleeding almost everywhere. It wouldn’t take long until he would die. Then the warrior releashed the last of his precasted spells and he was teleported back to his kingdom, in the middle of the hospital of the castle of the king. The doctors soon found him and immediatly started treating him. He had been of the verge of death, but now he had saved himself. The warrior wasn’t stupid and had precasted this spell that had taken all of his magical power at that time at the beginning of his journey to the land of the monsters. It was one of the most difficult spells to use as a precast spell, but he was the only magic swordsman that could use it. It was this spell that had made sure he had survived this whole time. Some called him a coward for using it, he called it a way to keep himself in life. He had informed the doctors of the hospital that he would one day appear half-dead in the middle of the hospital and the king had given him permission to use this method.

The monsters now were even more furious than when the warrior had appeared and had slayed almost half of the monsters that walked the their land at that moment. They swore vengenge on all humans and declared war on the entire humankind. Thus began the war between the humans and the monsters. The monsters attacked every country they could reach and slaughtered every human they could find. It was because of this war that the humans were forced to stop the wars that they were waging against themselves in order to fight their common enemy.

The endresult of the plan of the warrior was a succes. He had created a common enemy for the humans so that they would stop fighting among themselves. His quest had failed, but he was alive and he could now fight alongside every human in order to finally destroy every monster that lived on his world.

After the war they humans enjoyed a peace that would last for many centuries. Only the warrior and the king that had send him on the quest knew of the true reason why that war had started.

It's an old story. I haven't changed the way the sentences are written and it needs an update, but I'm too lazy to do it. Don't put too much effort into it.
