Your Letter Is Never Forgotten

Your Letter Is Never Forgotten

A Poem by Aella.lives

I found your letter crammed inside the pages

Of our old text

I have wondered where you had been.

The mountain wailed upon your breath

And black wings grew from doves

The sound was far and distant was

         The mourning of my light.

I can remember faces painted and chipped

You couldn’t wear nature

So you left me with my fear.

The amusement of childhood stood on splendor

While I gave discipline to my wrong heart

The letter stays safe in my breast pocket

The last of you I don’t think I can let go.

I made coffee with the pot from one of our old boxes

Took it to my chair

I think you would have liked my vanilla roast.

A sigh so strong and strange became a transfixed message off your lips

I never was a decent listener

But now I think I know.

Soft songs of trickling rain

A thought of broken moss

But the sound so far and distant was

         The mourning of my light.

Sometimes I brush my hands along with the brick wall beside our house

I always admire the rosebush we planted that one year

My hands get stained every time.

Your letter is worn now

Old and fragile not unlike my very soul

It stays with me everywhere I go

So I can read it from time to time.

I really enjoyed this piece. For me, great poetry should be about something universal, and that is precisely what you've captured here. Excellent work.
