Prologue

The fire was almost on me. I leaped across the burning remains of a tree, wincing as the flame licked the tip of my boot. I could hear cries, but they were too far away. If only I could make it to my hideout, I would be fine. To the hideout, to the hideout. I chanted the mantra in my head. The flame curled a smoked, devouring the leaves in my wake. To the hideout, to the hideout. The fire was too fast, the flame reached eagerly towards my body, and I fell, unable to keep up. I was paralyzed by fear. The last thing that went through my consciousness was Please, someone, help me. Then it all went black.
