Our Founding FathersA Chapter by Adrian X FuentessOlder Generation
When Timothy was a teenager, the only place where you could see a group of gays and lesbians was a bathhouse, or the underground public restrooms. Not precisely living up to their pride; half of them were married, others not even sure of what they were doing there, but all scared of being found out. Today, youth wears their sexuality in their sleeves at events like this one. However, Timothy believes that all the hard work that he and his friends put into making this festival a reality in the state is disappearing. Sure they rounded up volunteers and they did an amazing job, but half of them seem to be missing the point.
It's the twenty-first century, and not everyone is equal in this country which supposedly stands for liberty and justice for all. We still have to gather up in an isolated location in town so we're left alone, away from the homophobes; in the shadows again. And what do we do? Drink our asses off, start fights, hook-up, spend money in flashy clothes no one cares about, hate one another etc. Don't we all want our (what should be given) civil rights? Aren't we all human in search of our other better half? There is a huge generation gap in the gay community, Timothy realizes. Until he catches a glipmse of a guy sitting by himself, a beer in one hand and a cell phone in the other; his eyes lost staring at something and nothing. One thing we still share, Timothy thinks, that is pain and loneliness.
