What Then?

What Then?

A Poem by Adam Greenfield
"

Sometimes it seems like your luck might be tampered with. Very short poem about a fear.

"

There’s a feeling I get
that I won’t be there
when it finally arrives
riding in on waves
generated by countless days
that have passed
right before my eyes
and fell to the floor
right there in front of me
at my feet shoed in holey socks
and thin soulless soles.

I mean
what if there’s a knock
at my front door
and I’m not home to
let it in and make it feel welcome?

What if it never comes back?

What then?

Sounds like it is talking about the fear of losing hope. And the comment about not being there to let it in, sounds like one being afraid of missing that chance to have hope walk in the door.
But isn't hope with in onself? Thus it becomes just a simple choice to choose fear over hope.
Great Write. I find that it's one to think and ponder over. :)

so good to see a poem from you even if it is a somber one. that almost neurosis that creeps in to us when we are alone....well written.

you make your stories ring with truth in very few words and coming in on it knowing nothing about a writer they still speak like bottomless wells with familar faces. I dig

I love the perspective here...haunting.

for me, this was the fear of lost and/or missed opportunities. perhaps even from staring at the closed door too long, and forgetting about the breeze from the open window.

that's the fear that it brought up in me.

"I meanwhat if there's a knockat my front doorand I'm not home tolet it in and make it feel welcome?"

Love that.

This is a great, succinct piece. it really spoke to me. I actually really love it my dear

I really liked this and thought it was very creative. You have pushed the lines of normality and knocked the dust off the formal style with this. I love to see a writer work within their own ideas of what is abd should be and not fall victim to trying to force the flow of thoughts into something that has no life of its own. You have written something different and wonderful here.

Great Job!!!!!

I'm relishing in how the first "stanza" drops off...in soft staccatos? I can't explain that, really, but that's what comes to mind. There's emphasis on the cliff of words. It feels very lost. Not bad lost! Very emotional and breathy. I can clearly see a man sitting in his loveseat, staring down at his socks and interrogating them. The punniness of "soulless souls", though obvious, has depth. The man feels alone and he's there talking to his socks and shoes--that can't talk back.

This has to be one of the stronger poems of yours, sir. It's short, but jam-packed with character and backstory. I applaud you! (Damned if you don't read this tomorrow night!)

Nice work- ambiguous (appropriately so). I think you do a strong job of showing the fine line between fear and anticipation.
