Shell ShockA Poem by Lena RossmoreA poem I wrote about a man's life during the first World War; based on events seen on Downton Abbey.
He lives in a spectrum of fear, surrounded by war. Life in the trenches poisons his mind and weakens his soul. The lighter flicks on and he raises his hand out of the trench. The flame glows, dangerously effervescent. A second goes by, and then another; just one other. A bullet flies from the enemy and lodges itself deep into his hand. No cries of terror. No screams of pain. Thank you, He whispers to the wind. Thank you for my deliverance. © 2012 Lena RossmoreAuthor's Note
