One-Day Mothers

One-Day Mothers

A Story by Abz
"

My first short story. It is about a small incident from my college life.

"

One rainy evening she was brought from somewhere in the campus in a small cardboard box. The cardboard box was stealthily taken into a room in the first floor of our hostel. We locked the door, drew the curtains and kept our voices down so that no one else in our hostel gets to know about her.

Then I saw her. She was black and bony only but extremely cute. Her tiny vivid eyes were demanding full attention. Her hide with shining black hairs tempted everyone to lift and hug her. Her small pink tongue contrast to her black body and the yet-to-grow tiny tooth that got exposed when she yawned would make even a dumb to spurt out the word “cute” instantly. We were watching her spellbound when she perched, walked, ran jumping around, pounded the wall with her tiny limbs and tried to climb over one of us scratching eventually with her nails.

We fed her the milk brought from our mess in a small cup and a spoon that was arranged for immediately. We put her on a warm cloth which was someone’s old salwar shawl. We discussed on naming her when cute names came up as suggestions. For some names most of us agreed but someone objected. So we named her the way we liked, the names very close to our hearts. But we all unanimously had one wish that we never wanted to let go of her.

But rules come as villain everywhere. As per our hostel rules, we are not allowed to keep pets. So the cute little thing has to be kept hidden from the warden and the residential tutors of our hostel. We did our best to protect her and also arranged for shifts to take care of her that night.

We all knew that she cannot be kept hidden longer than a day. So we decided to hand her over to the CARE club of our college.

That night our sweetheart was locked in a room and handed over to the CARE club the next day. Later I came to know that someone in 3rd-year biotech adopted her. ”Lucky guy” we could only sigh. But we were happy that she is safe somewhere.

The cute little kitten and the day spent watching and admiring her cute deeds stands still fresh in our memory. When we catered to her needs, it made us all feel like mothers. We were the proud One-Day mothers in the presence of that cute little kitten.

Nice work @abz. Grammar needs a little bit of touching up but a very good attempt indeed!
