Snow

Snow

A Poem by Abigail

Snow

Snow, from the moment

I walked into the cat’s

adoption room filled with

an immense number of

felines, I knew you were

the one for us.

How so? Well, I walked

into the  room, huge

pressure on my chest,

I had to make the right

decision, you see, and

you came right up to me.

Black and white spots,

covering your body,

more black than white,

yet my brother and I

chose Snow, angelic,

peaceful, longed-for,

should be your name.

The adoption center

pointed out you

had six toes on

one of your feet,

they called you

Six-toe, but

they didn’t tell

us about the purring.

Snow, you never stopped

purring. You purred while

you ate, drank, slept,

walked, ran, it really

didn’t matter what

you were doing,

you just kept

purring, and

it was adorable

and purely you.

I’ll always miss your

purring. The hallways

are empty without it.

The one other thing

the adoption agency

didn’t warn us about,

they didn’t know that:

You loved being outdoors.

So of course we let you.

out of the house, even

During the winter

season, you loved

being an outdoor

cat. I’ll never

forget your

Face when you

first encountered

your namesake.

One day, though, you

didn’t come back.

I paced the streets,

calling your name,

shaking a can of

your favorite treats.

Nothing worked.

You didn’t come

back to us, to me.

Weeks later we found out

that you had ventured

too far. We found you,

white and black fur all

over the train tracks.

To this day, I still

have nightmares.
