Our Love Only Existed in Memory

Our relationship

was better in memory.

In my mind…

You tell me you love me every day.

I am always comfortable in your presence.

You give me the strength to fight on.

We readily list the reasons we love each other.

You kiss me in public and at home

My family supports us.

In reality…

You tell me I’m a waste of space

and of breath.

I am constantly hurt by your words

and your fists

You drain me of all the strength I have

left in me.

You readily list the reasons you hate me.

You kiss me in public and bruise me at home.

My family wants to save my life.

Why can’t I let them?
