LucyA Poem by AbiI wrote this poem a couple of weeks back as a tribute to my daughter who has spina bifida and hydrocephalus (excessive fluid on her brain). Would love to know what you all think!A child is a blessing, or so they
say, To be cherished and loved in every
way. Such a privilege it is to watch them
grow, To see them change, and learn and
know.
You imagine all sorts of who they’ll
become, Of exams passed and races won. Perhaps they’ll travel abroad one
day, Or see the world in a different way. But whatever life may have in store, One thing is certainly for sure. You never in a million years, Expect to cry so many tears.
For what if your child can’t run
like the others, Or score goals, Or chase their brothers. How do you plan for a future
uncertain, When it seems impossible to open the
curtains?
In having you, fate dealt me a hand, And changed me in ways I never
planned. I’m not super human, I’m not even
strong, Sometimes it’s a struggle to carry
on. I have days of hope, and days when i
cry, But one thing’s for sure, I’ll
always try, To raise you with faith and a caring
hand And support you in all that you have planned. Because I look upon you with such pride and awe, I’m not scared of the future any more
So my promise to you Lucy, As I watch you today, Your innocence and how you play, Is that however hard your life may
be, You can always depend on me, To praise you in the good times, and
hold you through the bad, To listen and support you when you
are sad.
And although you may be discouraged
for a while, Just promise me you’ll never lose
that smile. That you’ll never give up and keep
fighting on, with me here to rely upon. And know that although life is not
always fun, You can look to me, your mum, For endless love and a place to call
home, When it seems that you are all
alone. Because although life may seem cruel
and sometimes strange, There is not one thing about you
that I would ever change. © 2017 AbiAuthor's Note
