If I Had...

If I Had...

A Poem by Abhishek Ram

If I had a nickel for every time…

I annoyed people, I could buy their admiration.

I made people laugh at me, I’d be Jerry Seinfeld.

I was made into a joke, I’d be a copyright.

I was left broken and sad, I could afford a shrink.

If I had a friend for every time…

I felt alone, I would be surrounded by a nation.

My heart decided to fold, I would be taped up and upheld.

I cried in pain, there would be too many shoulders for too many sad nights.

I needed to escape my sorrows, there would be a frat party full of drinks.

If I had a new scar for every time…

I was broken, I would be a million times over dead.

I felt ruined, my eyes would be too torn for tears to be shed.

I was left to my own demons, I would look like one of them.

I failed myself and you, I would be a flower torn head from stem.

If I had to anger you every time…

I messed up, you would mess me up.

I felt dead, you might just arrange it.

You tried to salvage me, on the trash pile I still would be, no less on top.

You genuinely loved and cared for me, you would stop giving a s**t.
