The Twos of High School

The Twos of High School

A Poem by Abhishek Ram
"

Hey everyone! This poem is part of a set I would like to publish analyzing the different types of people in high school and the underlying causes for how they are.

"

In the universe, things always seem to come in twos,

Binary stars, family cars, even feet and shoes,

But twos aren't always as they seem,

For it may be one or three or just a dream.

As I walk the halls of high school's insides,

I see all these couples, but I can't decide,

Are they real? Is this true? Or will this be done soon?

Or from another did he/she steal? Why so sudden out of the blue? For each other, will they literally go to the moon?

I swear, all the kissing and groping seems real,

But I think the truth is discolored in a nice shade of teal,

Because things keep happening out of that blue, And crazy stories keep emerging about who screws who...

It's all gossip, really, about everyone's lives,

Just random tidbits a really bored person connived,

So full of stories that shock you and don't,

Because you may or may not have guessed, or maybe you just won't.

I see the failures of teenage decision making,

Perhaps that one-night stand didn't seem right in partaking?

Because he/she expects a relationship, and you don't want crap?

All this because you got with someone you wanted to tap.

And the sexual advances of people trying to make themselves "cool",

Getting with the "popular" kids, climbing the greatest steps to the highest steeple,

But, no matter how much you try, us you cannot fool,

With your freshman attempts to become popular that seems rather feeble.

So, in high school, things always come in twos:

One night stand or relationship

Truthful stories and gossip

Found love and stolen love

Just made by horny turtle doves,

Kissing and groping and innuendo,

Forever ongoing and continuing "YOLO",

And couples spawning out of nowhere,

Out of the surrounding walls, and I cannot bear,

To see so much wasted love and hate and time,

On things that may never ever be worth a dime.

But then I see a couple, a real couple, two in love,

An amount of happiness of which I can never see enough,

And I realize maybe high school isn't all that bad,

But then it makes me extremely sad,

That I cannot find that love for me from any other,

And sometimes I wonder, why do I even bother,

Surrounded by guys I consider like brothers and the girls who see each brother,

Why bother try, when I get left behind?

It isn't worth it, to me no one is that kind...

And so begins the process once more,

With my hidden pessimism beyond the closed door,

And I feel once again, and about this there's nothing I can do,

That in the universe, things always seem to come in twos.

Including me, except it's not the same,

Because I only have sadness and shame,

Boy with and without a name,

No girl and girls, because I seem so lame,

That they only see me as friends or as the center of a twisted game.

In the universe, things always seem to come in twos,

Nothing good for me though, and there's nothing I can do.

Through this set of poems, I intend to establish the role of society in causing high school to be the way it is and to best explain it in a way that we ourselves find difficult in doing. Tell me what you think!
