The Great Abyss

The Great Abyss

A Poem by Abhishek Ram
"

Plagued by the chains of desire we stand over the abyss and force ourselves to stare into it forever.

"

I spend my days staring into the great abyss,

A vast darkness that no one will ever miss,

Staring into the lives of others as they have fun,

As I am forced to watch them in light like the sun.

In truth, the abyss is no fun, I am completely done,

But I am chained by society to absolute sobriety,

I cannot get drunk off summer fun and instead I sleep,

Chained by society, I slumber real deep.

I dream of a time where things were not so,

I dream of a time when things will not be so,

I dream of a time where things are not so,

But then I awaken to see the abyss’ dark glow.

Society has chained me, solitude has changed me,

How I wish to for an escape to estranged glee,

Estranged because I haven’t felt such feeling in forever,

Chained to the cliff of the abyss watching other endeavors.

I know I am not alone, I am surrounded by people like me,

But we ignore one another because we are mesmerized,

Obsessed by the abyss and I have hypothesized,

That we are all afflicted for the desire to be free,

To go on crazy endeavors,

To be happy forever,

To have fun and then some,

To be free and be done,

Done with staring at the abyss.
