The tale of science, obsession, evil and death begins with this event.

EXT-SKY OVER GENEVA-NIGHT

Thunder roars throughout the sky on an explosively stormy night over the city of GENEVA. A piece similar to "PRUIT IGOE AND PROPHECIES" BY PHILIP GLASS consumes all sound other than that of the rolling thunder and howling wind.

SLOW PAN past the CITY and into a more rural area in a lush green hillside surrounded by forest and hills.

EXT-FRANKENSTEIN MANOR-NIGHT

The FRANKENSTEIN MANOR is modest but not tiny. We see a stone pathway leading from the front door of the house that seems to pass through the wooded area in the vague direction of GENEVA. A SIGN outside the HOUSE marks it as that of FRANKENSTEIN. SLOW PAN past the sign. The song still plays. SLOW PAN AROUND THE MANOR.

EXT-MANOR BACK LAWN-NIGHT

Sweeping green hills characterize the landscape. Flashes of lightning and dull moonlight illuminate the trees. Rain falls in erratic wind-blown patches. We see tiny, seven year old ELIZABETH run across the back lawn. She is dressed moderately, but is undeniably sweet. As she runs she calls loudly and nervously in a strong GENEVA ACCENT.

ELIZABETH

Victor! Victor!!!

She runs as fast as her short legs will carry her over the green grass in the direction of the larger hills. MADAME FRANKENSTEIN calls after her.

MADAME FRANKENSTEIN

Elizabeth! Come back!

ELIZABETH pays no heed to her adoptive mother's warnings and chargers on.

ELIZABETH

VICTOR!!! VICTOR!!!

EXT HILLS-NIGHT

The SONG begins to crescendo as we slow BEV pan to where young VICTOR is standing at the top of a hill watching the storm. His young face is transfixed on the LIGHTNING. Wonder fills his reflective eyes. The lightning flashes brightly again. He gasps in shock and awe. A tiny tear descends from his left eye. We hear ELIZABETH'S VOICE FROM A DISTANCE.

ELIZABETH

VICTOR! VICTOR!

VICTOR does not hear his cousin's calls. He is hypnotized by the lightning storm. ELIZABETH struggles up the HILL towards him. She finally reaches the TOP and runs to him.

ELIZABETH

VICTOR! Oh, Victor, you must come home!

ELIZABETH wraps both arms around him tightly and struggles to lead him back to the MANOR. VICTOR resists her for a moment, his eyes still facing the skies. He stumbles backwards and pushes her away upon realizing what she is doing.

VICTOR

Let me go! Leave me be! I must watch the storm!

SUDDENLY, a TREE a very short distant away is DECIMATED by a fierce bolt of LIGHTNING. BOTH children scream and run back down the HILL. A few meters down VICTOR starts to look back over his shoulder again. ELIZABETH takes him by the hand and urges him to come back home but he does not listen to her. He stares up at the storm again, obsessed with its power and capabilities. SLOW PAN on VICTOR'S FACE.

CU ON VICTOR'S FACE
