Will’s Diary
The WORST Visit to Grandma

12th of April
Let me get this straight, this is a JOURNAL, not a DIARY. I know it may seem the same thing, but it’s not. Diary is for GIRLS whereas journal is for BOYS.

Anyway, it all started last year when the Walters went away to visit grandma Jane, which was the WORST visit.

Grandma Jane lives very, very, very far away. You might think she lives on the moon. Last time I’ve seen her was when I was three years old. I actually miss her a lot.

Anyway, it was Mum’s idea to visit Grandma Jane. She said that staying away from Melbourne would be great. Mum has never been out of Melbourne which is why she was very excited to visit Grandma Jane.

Dad had purchased four tickets to London, where grandma lives. Mum was preparing the suitcases for our trip.

‘WILL,’ mum called me.

I went upstairs to see what mum wanted.

‘Could you please help your sister with her suitcase?’ she asked.

‘Why?’ I asked with frustration. ‘Sarah is 9 years-old, she can do it herself,’ I complained.

‘Will, she’s your little sister,’ she said.

Mum always uses this excuse. Last week before I went to bed, she asked me to brush Sarah’s teeth. And my response was, ‘ HELL NO!’. Page.1

Things did not stop there. Mum was over excited. She told everyone in the neighbourhood that we’re traveling outside of Melbourne.

I feel kind of bad for her and happy at the same time. It was the FIRST time for the Walters to go to another country.

14th of April
It was 8 a.m. Everything was prepared for our trip. Before we headed to the airport, mum had made an announcement.

‘Before we leave, let’s check that we have everything,’ she said.

The list of things we had was VERRRRY long. It took us HOURS to go through all of it.

After we finally finished. We headed to the airport. I was kind of excited as Mum was. What would it be like outside of Melbourne?

Sarah turned to me. I had no idea what she wanted or what she was about to say.

‘Brother, do you know where London is?’ she asked.

I was very good at geography. Last year, there was a geography competition where contestants had to know the capitals of mostly every country on earth. And I so the 1st prize.

Anyway, I looked at her with all confidence.
‘London is located in Europe, and it is the capital of England,’ I told her. Page.2

‘And is Europe very far from Melbourne?’ she asked again.

‘It’s very far away,’ I replied.

An hour later, we have finally arrived at the Melbourne Airport. It was a long-distance road trip. Our flight was at 12:30pm. That meant we had to wait in the waiting room for more than two hours.

Dad went to the cafeteria and had ordered breakfast for us. I was not too hungry.

‘Will, are you ok?’ Dad asked.

‘I am fine,’ I muttered.

Mum got up and suggested to walk around the airport to pass the time. It was not a bad idea. We all got up and started walking around and looking from left to right.

‘Mum, where’s the toilet?’ asked Sarah.

‘Will, can you take your sister to the toilet please?’ Mum begged me.

Why do I have to do everything? Am I the ONLY Will on earth?

I took Sarah to the toilet and I waited for her outside. She took hours. I lost patience and got a little mad.

‘Sarah?’ I called. ‘Sarah, are you done?’

After I called for her twenty times, she finally got out.

‘What took you so long?’ I asked with anger.

‘What? Can’t I go to the toilet?’ she mumbled. Page.3

Two hours later, it was finally 12:30. And our flight was about to fly in a few minutes. We all got on the plane. It was so huge and so white.

As we sat in our seats, there was an announcement from the pilot.

‘Welcome aboard, passengers,’ he welcomed. ‘Please put your seatbelts on and stay seated for your safety until we arrive at our destination,’ he warned.

As the pilot finished his announcement, we were ready to go. The plane went all the way above the clouds. It was an amazing view.

‘Goodbye, Melbourne,’ farewelled Sarah.

The journey was very long. The time to get to London was 20 hours. I was a little uncomfortable.

‘Mum, this seat is so uncomfortable,’ I complained.

‘Will, can’t you see I’m watching The Whale Rider?’ she said.

I forgot to tell you that Mum was so obsessed with this movie called The Whale Rider. It was about this girl who becomes the leader of her community after facing a lot of troubles and challenges.

Anyway, I still couldn’t stay seated so I went to the bathroom. When I went in, I was so surprised. The bathroom was like a magical place.

The toilet was coloured with gold and there was even music playing. It was like HEAVON.
Page.4

I stayed there for like half an hour until… There was a knock on the door.

‘C’mon,’ a stranger’s voice said. ‘You’re taking so long in there,’ he yelled.

I didn’t know what was going on. I opened the door and there was an old man standing by the door.

‘Little kiddo, what were you doing inside all this time?’ he asked.

‘Umm, nothing,’ I said. ‘Here, you can go,’

I was not enjoying this journey. I wish I just stayed home and played some video games.

15th of April
It was 5am and it has already been 17 hours. My bones were broken. I couldn’t even feel my hands and legs.

The announcement sound rang unexpectedly. There was another announcement from the pilot.

‘Attention passengers, I’d like to inform you that there’s a little problem with the engine and we’re trying to fix this problem, you may expect some delays in the arriving time, thank you,’ he announced.

I couldn’t believe my ears. Was this some kind of a joke? Well, April Fool Day has already passed. There was NO WAY I was going to stay seated any longer. But I had no choice.

‘I’m going to see what’s the problem,’ Dad said as he walked to the pilot’s seat.

‘Would you like to hear some stories?’ Mum suggested.

‘Yes, please,’ I begged.

I love stories that are told by mum. They pass the time and they’re so enjoyable to hear. Page.5

Anyway, some passengers started to get a little frustrated. They could not hold themselves.

‘Hey!’ one of the passengers shouted. ‘Are we going to wait more?’ he asked.

The condition was getting bad. None of the passengers could stay seated. Everyone was in a panic as I was too.

45 minutes later, the pilot had a very important announcement.

‘Hello passengers, I’d like to let you know that we have fixed the problem with the engine and we can continue our journey,’ he said.

This was the BEST news ever. We were not too far from London. I just prayed that we arrive with no more problems.

One hour later, we have finally arrived! After more than 20 hours on the plane. We all headed to the front gate and GOT out of the aeroplane.

And guess who was waiting for us at the airport? It was GRANDMA! It was a big surprise. Me and Sarah ran towards Grandma Jane and gave her the BIGGEST hug.

‘Oh, you lovely kiddos,’ said Grandma. ‘I have missed you a lot, you cheeky kids,’

‘Mum!’ yelled mum.

‘Oh, daughter! It’s great to see you again,’ cried Grandma.

Grandma Jane was my mum’s mother. And she was dad’s mother-in-law. We were all pleased to see Grandma Jane after a CENTURY! Page.6

16th of April
It was our first day in London. Grandma Jane has prepared everything for us.

‘Sarah, Will,’ called Grandma. ‘Breakfast is ready,’ she said.

‘I have made PANCAKES!’ she shouted.

Grandma Jane makes the BEST pancakes in the whole universe. We all gathered around the dinning table. It was a beautiful day. The sun raised. The sky was blue. And everything was so quiet.

‘Grandma, What are we going to do today?’ I asked.

‘Well, kiddo, I’ll be taking you to the National London Museum,’ she said.

Okay, so here are my thoughts take them as you will.
You have the voice right, this is clearly written by a child. In some ways, this reminds me of the Captain Underpants books and Judy B. Jones. So, I am going to say that is a good thing. (I haven't read them in a few years). However, I get the feeling that this wouldn't be the first story. I also, can't help but feel like all the dialogue should be in the story since it is a journal and most of the time people don't remember dialogue when writing about the day, at least not everything.
I'm not too sure how old this child is, but I am guessing around 10-12. Just so you are aware of how old Will reads.
Randomish side note: when you said Will's mom had never been out of Melbourne, I thought that it was Will's dad who was Grandma Jane's. Since it would seem unlikely that if Grandma Jane had lived in London for any real amount of time her child would not have been there. A quick way to clarify would be to say that she had just moved there, but had live in the city the rest of her life, or while raising mum. But this was the first visit to see her since her recent move.
Overall, it was pretty good.
