The Two Step

The Two Step

A Poem by Abigale LeCavalier

The Two Step

I have things I want
to say to her,
I do.

Thinking independently
is not my forte however.

And it’s fear
that keeps me in check;
I send doppelgangers
in my place,
Audrey Hepburn
with a knock-off Gucci clutch,
Courtney Love
on the brain.

It’s a way
to sidestep
when it’s the only step left,
wetting my appetite
for anxiety.

And much of it.

So I dream in reds,
finding sunflowers
without trepidation.

Because I think
she knows,
already.
