Excited Dogs

Excited Dogs

A Poem by Abigale LeCavalier

Excited Dogs

Shaking through leather
and the buckles
of her boots,
feeling herself
for the first time,
but not really,
the first time.

Locked in a box,
or a ribbon
on a diamond ring,
barking,
like excited dogs do.

Twisting the piercing
in her nose,
just to make sure
the pain is
still there.

It is.

Like a ripple.

And the world
is slowing down,
letting her take
a few clumsy steps.

Before swallowing her whole,
and starting over,
again.
