Fish

Fish

A Poem by Abigale LeCavalier

Fish

Standing in the grey light
of another cold ocean morning.

Thinking,
“I can go another day
without the bread,
but not without the water.”

And the air is just thick enough
to breathe,
filling my lungs with salt,
and the persistence of fog.

While the hole
in my center
remains empty.

For I have no fish
to fill it with,
nor emotion.

And I may crumble
like bricks,
in mind
and body.

But it will
take more than this,
to break my soul.
