The Best of Friends

The Best of Friends

A Poem by Abigale LeCavalier

The Best of Friends

Every morning

they meet

in the same place

at the same time,

to pool whatever money

they made

the day before.

One with a coffee cup

and the other with a paper bag.

They smile when they

see each other,

and it’s another

chilly sunrise

under the pier.

But it’s these moments

that keep them warm.

And in tune

with who they are.

They get two sandwiches

and two big beers,

and laugh about every

so and so

who wouldn’t “kick down,”

a nickel.

They wash their faces

in the cold ocean water,

shaking hands before again

hitting the streets.

Same place,

same time,

tomorrow.
