It's About Time

It's About Time

A Poem by AaronC

Want to know the true value of a second?

Ask the athlete who just came in second.

Take a minute like K'naan

It didn't take a minute for Adolf to start the Holocaust

But it only takes a minute to see how sick it is

This thing called “time”, it's ubiquitous.

You don't know the value of an hour till you get up late

And forget to take a shower and you stank.

It's out of our power so why do we call time ours?

Such as “me” time, I don't see time with your name on it.

“Free time” or “tea time”, no label on it.

No person has the ability to stop it

So we find our purpose to be to clock it,

Jot it down and record it.

Create terms so we decipher this distorted fortress

Then store it so we can feel rewarded

Feel that we moved forward.

We even made it cordless.

“Time”, we forced it to be the reason our society functions.

Use it to make sure we're always on time for functions.

And meetings.

But meeting people has less meaning

Now that we can meet up another time in the future.

That's what we're used to doing

'Cause now time's become so ensuing

'Cause the whole world's in a rush

Wait 10 minutes for a bus,

And suddenly it feels like too much.

One minute for your webpage to load

And now your computer's too slow.

I know I've thought the same way

I was born in '95 and raised

In this place where everything's a race

But there's no first place,

Just last.

'Cause nothing lasts when it's only been there for a day.

Ask Dilated Peoples. Who? Needless to say

But hey, 15 seconds seems like a long time

If that's how much fame you get, you'll be alright

Maybe not all right or all tight, but dope

Since that's what you smoke to cope with the loss of hope

Despair.

Next thing you know, your clock's tickin'

Twice as fast, death could only take a minute

Not thinkin' 'cause that takes up seconds

3 seconds too long when you're trying to call 9-1-1

The phone rings like an alarm.

Each ring just takes too long.

And the sound of the operator's voice,

The slight delay between when she speaks and when you hear it

Could make the devil rejoice.

And you fear it.

So you cut her off “I don't have time for this!

I overdosed on cocaine, I'm dying

What? No, I'm not lying!

Yes I'm aware that it's illegal

Just please treat me equal!

Equally! Whatever! I don't give a damn!

My heart's gonna fail and you're correcting me?

Just take a second please, try and understand!”

The slight movements of your mouth to intonate the words take longer than expected

And suddenly your need to rush seems neglected.

The world stops and you almost feel protected

But it's about time your wrongs are corrected.

So in 5 seconds, your body's sprawled on the pavement

You're dead and 8 million seconds of your life wasted.
