Chapter Eight- Missing links

He walked down the busy cobblestone street; as he did a large building adorned with Greek pillars came in to view.  Strolling up to it he read the sign “The British Museum”.   Standing there with the huge building looming over him he decided to take a peak.  Walking up to the counter the teller asked him for 6 pounds.  After he strolled down the hallway until a flicker of a golden sign caught his eye.  This sign read “Book of the Dead”.   He wasn’t sure why he had never been one for history, but he could feel something pulling him to dive deeper into the exhibit.  He walked up to the first book and stared in to the brown papyrus, his eyes traced the intricate patterns that adorn the book with a one lost tongue in blue ink.  anx anx an mit-k”  he said out loud the words flowing smoothly from his lips.

“Live life, not shalt thou die” a thick British voice replied causing Sahen to whip around.  “Whoa, whoa didn’t mean to sneak up on you, my sincerest apologies.”  An average middle age man with brown hair and brown eyes held his hands out waving an apology gesture.  Sahen realized he had picked up a strange gold dagger and it was hovering awfully close to the man’s throat.  Without a word he quickly put it back on the table and sat down on the bench beside it, rubbing the dazed look off his face.  It was as if he’d just woken up.

“Do you have a name?  Mines Jenkins Harold, Ancient cult’s specialist, pleasure to meet you!”  The man said stretching out his hand.  Sahen grabbed it and shook.

“Harris, I’m…from Virginia.

“Ah!  From the Wild West!  So my young cowboy what are you doing in this exhibit?”  Jenkins asked.

“I’m not really sure I just went out for some lunch, and I guess I ended up here?” Sahen said walking over to a painted gold statue.  He reached out to touch it.  It was an intricate status of a falcon; it stood about two feet tall off of its stand.  The eyes seemed to pierce in to Sahen as if he was looking at a reflection.  There was something familiar about it.

Heru, the Egyptian god of the Sun.” Jenkins said.

“Heru…”  He repeated.  As the two stood there admiring the statue

“Well I must be off; I’m giving a lecture about the cult of Apollo.  It was a pleasure meeting you Mr. Harris.”  He extended his hand again and Sahen took it.  “It was nice meeting you.” He said before returning to look at the statue.

After Jenkins had left he must have spent at least twenty minutes ensnared in the statues gaze until he felt a presence behind him.  He spun around too late to see a taller girl with long black hair cut just above her eyes…her eyes that where too different colors, but they looked so familiar.  She holding what looked like the sword and that was all he saw before she clonked him on the head the world faded to black.

Sahen let out a loud gasp when he woke up.  He touched the place she had hit him on his head.  Looking down he yelled at X in his lap.  “YOU HIT ME!”

“Sahen?!  Would you keep it down?!” Gawain hissed.

“SHE HIT ME!”  He responded pointing with both his hands at X in his lap.

“She didn’t touch you she’s still out cold!” Gawain

Sahen looked baffled then finally a scowl took over his face and he glared out the window.  They turned onto a narrow gravel road seemingly in the middle of nowhere, turning around many sharp bends.  The forest that had erupted behind them was so dense and dark that Sahpphire had to slow down to almost a roll to avoid going off the edge.

Finally they pulled up to a large sandstone gate, Sapphire stepped out and Gawain followed.  They went over to pry the cast iron gates open to get through.  Gawain noticed something on the floor and bent down to prod it.  “Salt?”  He questioned looking up at Saf.  But all she did was shrug and return to the car.

Behind the gate the trees had given and there was more room to speed up.  The small gravel path seemed to disperse in to a mixture of red rock and dirt, they turned a corner to see the outline of someone and Sapphire had to slam on the breaks to avoid hitting them.  “Ugh!” was the noise Sahen made upon smacking his head on the front seat.  “Stay here” Sapphire said calmly and got out.  “Um no.”  Gawain said getting out as well.  “Hello?” Sapphire asked the shadow before walking up she had her hand in her pocket and was holding a small dagger.

“Bloodie I can’t see a thing through those lights, is that you X?”  A thick British accent asked.  “Uph!”  Gawain pounced on the man.  “Gawain! “  Sapphire yelled running up to them.  “Jenkins!”  She yelled upon seeing the man’s face.  “Sapphire?”  The man answered back looking bewildered between Saf and Gawain.  “Would you get off him” Sapphire said pushing Gawain off of Jenkins.  “Did you drive here?”  She asked.  “Well I did but I ran out of gas right before the turn off.”

“So you walked all the way up here?” Sahen asked making all of them jump.  “Wait I know you?”  Sahen had that look that said his brain was groping around all of his memories.  “Ah yes the boy from the book of the dead exhibit in London!  We were admiring the Horus statue.  Sadly after that the statue was stolen.”  A solemn look over came Jenkins face. Sapphires face seemed to turn red at this statement.  “Yes I remember full name is Sahen Harris, yours is Jenkins right?”

“Sahen?  Sahen Harris.”  Jenkins smacked his face as if he’d just remembered something he had to do.  “Well then I guess we better be getting to the house.”  Jenkins said looking around adding.  “Where is X?”

“At the risk of sounding cliché, Come on we’ll explain on the way.” Sapphire said.

After they had all packed into the car X’s head placed on Jenkins lap and her feet on Sahens they continued the drive in silence.  X eyes fluttered have open.

“Jenkins?  X murmured.  “I’ve died…I’ve died and gone to that Christian thing….hell…” She whispered sarcastically, a little blood dribbled from the corner of her mouth as she talked and she again faded out of conciseness.

So let me get this straight you guys are here for a week and you’ve already picked a fight with the worst people in town?  Wait a minute something’s not right…you… you guys…?”  Sapphire braced for the “chewing out“ as X would have put it that was coming her way.

“YOU!  You weren’t supposed to be here for another month!”  Jenkin quietly yelled at Sapphire.  “Well I was-“Sapphire was interrupted.  “But that means?  Who’s looking after the temple?” His face had now turned a deep red.”  Sapphire flashed him a look in the rear-view mirror.

“I took care of it Anum is watching the place till you head back?”  “Were doomed!  That’s it were doomed.”  He said melodramatically and waving his hands as far up as the car would allow.  “Supposed bring Heru back in and yet I can’t even get a servant to listen!  And Anum is running the temple.  Gawain glanced at sapphire questioningly well Sahen pressed up to his side of the car and stared straight ahead. “I wouldn’t be surprised if when I got back the temple was on fire... The STONE temple!”  Jenkins continued to ramble on for about 15 minutes after that.

Finally Sapphire parked the car in front of a huge Sandstone mansion; it seemed to be fighting a battle with some dark vines.  It had a large wooden door at the front of it.  The sandstone bricks were covered in intricate carvings.  It was missing a piece here and there but other that it looked to be in good shape.  Sapphire got out and went around the car to open the door for Jenkins.  “Oh well thank you my lady!  He said cheerily, he carefully lowered X head on to the seat.  “Now who has the lucky task of caring her?” he asked.  “I will” Everyone looked surprised when Sahen walked up and gentle pulled her out of the car.  “Weren’t you just whining about her hitting you on the head?”  Gawain asked accusingly.  But Sahen just shrugged and lifted her into his arms then started making his way to the door.

He grunted as a pain started searing in his left eye again but he managed to ignore most of it and looked into the forest.  He saw the outline of what looked to be a dog.  “You cannot take her.”  He suddenly growled at it pressing X closer to his body.  “What did you say?”  Gawain followed his gaze but couldn’t find what he was looking at.  “I don’t know-nothing but does anyone want to open the door?  She’s heavier than she looks.”  Saf quickly ran up and pulled out a key that looked older than the house itself, but it worked.

They filed in Gawain who was the last one, looked down to the floor again to see salt poured along the door frame.  He raised he head and one eyebrow to Sapphire.  “What we come from a…”  She pondered… “Superstitious family?” She decided.

“Holy f**k… Why are there so many stairs?!”  Sahen said when he finally made it to the top.  He paused to lean on the railing.  “Ok where’s the bedroom?”  He said looking at Sapphire.  “Over here she said turning to the right and then down a short hallway.  She opened the second door on the left and walked in.  Inside was a small hospital bed an oxygen machine.  There was a small table it an assortment of herbs on it as well as a mortar and pestle.  The only other thing in the room was a chair beside the bed.

“Wow…” Gawain said.  Sahen walked over to the bed and put X on it before Plopping down on the chair.  “If you don’t mind I’m just going to stay here.”  Sahen said closing his eyes.  Sapphire walked up to X and pulled up her shirt to see the damage.  “Hmmm….”  Sapphire said deep in thought.  “What is it?”  Sahen said with one eye open.  “She seems to be bleeding internally.  “What!  We should be getting her to a hospital!”  He said bolting up.  “No, no that will be worse for her.”  Sapphire said walking over to the table.

Sahen looked unimpressed but returned to his seat.  “Now let’s see I need White oak, Tormentil, shave grass and shepherd's purse.  Sapphire went to work mixing the ingredients.

After she had finished and give the mixture to X, she told Sahen she was going to get some rest and that he should too.  “Is it alright if I stay here?”  He said looking at X.  Sapphire nodded then disappeared out the door and Sahen leaned forward and watched over X.
