RABBITS IN THE SKY

RABBITS IN THE SKY

A Poem by DONALD EISSLER
"

Early morning with just my dog "Happy" and me thinking about the past

"
Well I hear a rooster crowing,
The coyotes are singing too.
I sit here drinking coffee
As the sun starts popping through.

Mountains that were hidden
Now they come in view.
Trees are no longer shadows,
But still have that hint of  blue.

My dog she lays along side me,
Her head placed upon my shoe.
She used to go chasing rabbits.
Now too old for that to do.

I wonder what she's thinking?
Maybe glories of the past,
As she barked and chased those rabbits.
Damn those things where fast!

All she has is memories now
As she lays here by my side.
But every time she sees a rabbit
Her eyes still open wide.

My heart is full of sorrow
Knowing she's getting towards her end.
No one could ever have
A better loyal friend.

Facing death and sorrow,
She was there to comfort me.
Never asking anything.
Except to let her out to pee

Now the sun has warmed
My baby's brittle bones.
I watch as she walks away
Leaving me alone.

I think my baby knows
That her time here now is short.
Maybe she's preparing me
For her final walk.

But when that day
Finally does arrive.
Tears will flow like rapids,
Though a smile will I try.

For as I drink my coffee
My eyes will look up high
I know that I will see
Happy, chasing rabbits in the sky.

So achingly true! This could have been written about my Nittany...he's seen me through and been longer with me than any human. Oh the things he could say if he could talk! (Although I'm extremely glad he can't!).

This is such a heartfelt write about your loyal friend
and I can identify completely. After all they are family.
You might enjoy my "TRIBUTE TO A SPECIAL FRIEND."

brought back memories of our old beagle Wrinkles. Yes, they know when their time has come. I'm sure he's up their chasing cloud rabbits and when your baby goes, I'll bet she be right up there running with him. Even though the subject matter is melancholy, this piece has a cadence to it.. like a song you want very much to sing

Hehee another great piece, I've had a dog currently have two but I had one past away. Peggy black lab, had her when I was a kid. She died of old age her body got too old. Bless. You know this made me sad just remembering... Close to tears. Still loved it.

You are quite good. Your word choices are rich and your descriptions are sultry ... attractive in a way that suggests a passionate nature.

A beautiful Ode to a loyal friend, I never had a dog, living in an apartment would be cruel they need space to run, the connection is heartfelt, well done
