Midnight DaydreamA Poem by Doug JohnsonMy poetic description of an event that recently occurred. It's cheesy and pretentious but that's how I am.Time slows down and comes to a halt As it comes careening towards me, Quickly gathering speed. The night closes in and surrounds so tightly While it expands and opens, Making room for it all This moment is fleeting, momentary It cannot last longer than the span of a poem Or even the length of a breath Yet at the same time, it extends And reaches past the bonds of reality One moment becomes a lifetime A lifetime that could never be explained A moment that I could not talk about Or dare to write down The fear is what takes hold The fear of sounding cliché, Sounding inaccurate The fear of the truth And the fear of the inaccuracies The fear of saying exactly what happened Because it was never supposed to It was an imagination, A daydream in the middle of the night A break from the norm A crack in the ordinary A defiance of the world And the rules created by it The world spun round But no longer was the earth around the sun It was I, spinning around you, In an orbit around the car in which we sat The seasons came and went The years flew on But beyond our little space, There was nothing Everything and nothing All at once In a collision of worlds and words, No logic involved A perfect moment Created by so many tiny imperfections An atmosphere of pure energy Amidst a beautiful, calm wind We laughed, As we looked around Our own private world Slowly melting back into reality The stars are relit The moon is returned to the sky We slam lightly to the ground And scream out a sigh Home again, home again And no one to tell Because it was only just us Cast under the spell. © 2015 Doug Johnson |
