![]() Rainy Night (Work in Progress)A Story by Doug Johnson![]() This is hopefully going to be the beginning of something. I don't know quite what I want it to be, but I want it to exist. It's based off of something that actually happened, but it may become fiction![]() It was during the rainy summer, when everything was green and alive. Compared to the full life of looking at dead things lining the sides of the road, it was magical to breathe in the fresh aroma of life. The nights were dark, but no longer cold. The moisture in the air kept everything feeling warm and comfortable, like a blanket draped tenderly around a sleeping child’s shoulders. The sound of rain was something I was unaccustomed to, and it was unnerving to hear the constant flow of water, even if I couldn’t see it from exactly where I was. Walking under the large, drooping trees made the world feel like a magical island, where a gang of pirates might be hiding out, or a group of talking animals was holding council inside the large hollow trunk of a tree. There’s something refreshing about walking in the rain. Perhaps to people who witness it all the time, it’s just another one of those boring, frustrating nuisances that must be dealt with on a regular basis. Yet to me, it felt like a spell being continuously cast on me and everything else in the area. Lightning struck in the distance, but it wasn’t the kind that makes you hold your breath and run inside as the thunder rolls immediately behind it. Rather, it was my own private light show, put on by some distant deity for her own amusement. It was the kind of night that deserves to be explained to everyone, but it was also something that could never truly be shared unless everyone present had seen it. It could be described, but somehow the drops of water splashing onto my skin, and the feeling of the wind blowing straight through me cannot be shown to someone else. I was in my own private dream, my own private world. Everything was good because I decided it was; and nothing was going to change that fact. That was the night I went to see you. © 2015 Doug Johnson |
