Extinguished

Extinguished

A Poem by Augusto Miguel Gamboa

Never base joy on an picture
The truth lies in literature
Images covering goodbyes
They paint a thousand words
but half of those are lies

The sun's reflection through it's glass
Hung on a wall that's been scratched
Bite marks and bandaids hidden behind photos
as the glass refracts light so plastic it melts before it glows

Cracks wrapped with care
Cuts hidden behind smiles
Pain under pretension
And a knot too tight to unwind

Fireworks that went off unlit, 'twas a spark that brought us together
But the soul I took a bullet for, now the hand behind the trigger
With the pull of a finger, it fires as if we could never remember
The last few minutes of December
Overshadowed by self-inflicted anger
While silhouettes nullify the nostalgic desire
Now just traces of ash from an ever glowing fire
