A Story by Allison Atwater
"

A young woman received a telephone call about her fiance... is it a beginning of something? I am not sure...

"

The phone that sat on the counter in Samantha’s kitchen rang. She was expecting it to be a telephone call from Jake. They normally spoke twice a day. It was getting late, and she was getting worried, she hadn’t heard from him since the morning and she usually heard from him at around 8oclock when he arrived home.

"Hello?" she said, trying not to sound worried.

"Samantha Taylor?" the voice on the other end of the phone asked.

"Yes speaking?"

"Do you know a Ryan Jacob?"

"Who is this?"

"Ms. Taylor, my name is Lt. Jonathon Davidson of the LAPD." The voice introduced. "Do you know Ryan Jacob?"

"Yes, I do, why has something happened to Ryan?"

"You were listed as Mr. Jacob’s emergency contact."

"Oh my God what happened to Ryan? You have to tell me."

"Mr. Jacob’s car was found abandoned on the Santa Monica Freeway this morning. His wallet was found lying on the floor of the driver side of the car." LT Davidson explained. "We have reason to believe that foul play was involved. Ms. Taylor have you spoken to Mr. Jacob recently?"

"Yes, I spoke to him this morning, he was going to work out at the gym and then to a lunch meeting."

"Did he mention, whether he was having any financial troubles, or if he had anyone after him."

"Nnnnnoooooo, what are you saying? Is Ryan still alive?"

"I can’t say, so far we haven’t found his body, so we are hopeful."

"But you said, you are suspecting foul play."

"Unfortunately, I can’t tell you anything else at this time Ms. Taylor. If you can think of anything that might assist us in finding Mr. Jacob, please call me."

"I will, thank you LT. Please let me know when you find Ryan."

"I will, Ms. Taylor, try not to worry."

"Thank you Lieutenant." Samantha felt the tears brimming in her eyes as she hung up the phone. "Ryan is missing?"

She held the receiver of her cordless Telephone in her hand and starred blankly at it. Ryan, her Ryan was missing. She dialed Ryan’s cell phone.

"Hi you’ve reached Ryan. I can’t take your call right now but leave me a message and I’ll call you as soon as I can. Thanks and have a great day. Cheers."

"Ryan, its me. Please call me as soon as you get this message."

They had been highschool sweethearts. How was she going to live with out Ryan? Even when she was transferred up to Vancouver, BC Canada, they vowed that they would make their relationship work. How was she going to tell his parents that their only son was missing. It was a telephone call that she did not want to make. Picking up the phone she dialed the home of Ryan’s parents.

David and Ellen Jacob were preparing for bed when the telephone that sat on an oak nightstand rang.

"Hello," David Jacob answered.

"Hi Dad." Samantha said trying to remain calm, but felt her heart beating in her ears.

"Sammy, how are you dear." David said warmly.

"I’m ok. Dad have you spoken to Ryan lately?"

"Not since last Tuesday when he called about the engagement. Sammy what’s wrong?"

"I just received a Telephone call from the LAPD." Samantha said fighting the tears. "Apparently…"

"Sam, relax what did they say?"

"Ryan’s car was found abandoned on the Santa Monica Freeway. The police suspect foul play. Dad, what if they don’t find him. What am I going to do with out him?"

"Sweetheart, relax, I am sure he’s going to turn up with some enchanting tale of intrigue. You know Ryan."

"I know, that does seem like something he would do."

"Yes, it is." David tried to mask the concern in his voice. "Don’t worry, he’ll turn up."

"Regardless, I’m coming to Los Angeles, I have to look for him." Samantha said.

"The police are doing all they can…."

"Dad, I’ve got four weeks of vacation time, I’ll use that. But regardless someone has to be at Ryan’s apartment when he gets home."

"Sam did you try his cell phone?"

"Yes, and I got his voice mail."

"Will you be staying with your folks?"

"No, I’ll stay at Ryan’s."

"Let us know when you will be arriving."

"I’m going to try to get the first available flight."

"Alright Sweetheart, see you when you get here. And Samantha… don’t worry, he’ll show up."

"I know, David. Thank you."

"We love you sweetie."

"I love you too. Give my love to Ellen."

"Will do. See you tomorrow.’

The next thing she had to do was book the first available flight to Los Angeles.

Samantha was tossing and turning and she couldn’t sleep one bit. The telephone that sat on her nightstand rang. Her heart was pounding rapidly.

"Hello?" She said.

"*static* Sam" it was Ryan’s voice.

"Ryan, honey are you ok?"

"*static* Sam listen to me carefully." He was whispering. "*Static* I don’t have much time to explain. I’ve been kidnapped by…"

"What are you doing you mother f...er ..…Did we say you could use this? *Static * The phone went click and the sound of the dial tone resonated in Samantha's ear.

Samantha stared with horror filled eyes at the telephone. Her worst fear had just been realized and she knew what she had to do.

I am not sure if I have an actual novel here or if it is a short story. I have let this one sit on the shelf awhile to see if anything comes to me. Any suggestions as to how the story should proceed.
