A Memory Lost In Time

A Memory Lost In Time

A Story by Arnold John Foxfield
"

A short story about an intimate moment between two young lovers.

"

If I'd known what time had in store for me, I would have lingered a little longer. Back then on the beach where we were walking hand in hand, as if we were the only two people in the whole world. The wind messed up our hair, there was salt and water blowing all around us as the waves were crashing ashore. The sand was soft, blindingly white, surprisingly cool under our feet. I started running and you followed every step of the way, laughing and chasing me through those white dunes. Until I grabbed you by your waist unexpectedly, we fell together into the sand, laughing, rolling around together. You ended up under me, I felt how our heartbeats tried to keep up with each other, I could feel how you were breathing heavily as I was. As I looked into your eyes, I knew how we both felt. We promised each other the rest of our lives, to be together, forever. Sparks were flying as our lips touched, and I felt my head spinning, the adrenaline rushing through my entire body, I was feeling euphoric, it was addicting and didn’t want it to end. When we did stop, both grasping for air, I saw your eyes twinkling with joy. Your dark brown hair was full of sand, and so was everything else. But it didn’t matter, time had stopped for us, even if it was only for a second, we truly loved each other, nothing would separate us. Back then I really believed it.

But the moment didn’t last, time doesn’t really stop, and now it’s only a memory. It’s just a feeling somewhere lost in time and space, forever a memory just between the two of us. That’s how cruel time can be; it moves on when we wish to linger a little longer, I can only relive it when I close my eyes. The pain that followed is something I wish to forget, but wounds heal with time, we find new love, create new memories, it's one unique experience after another. Some day in the future I’ll love like that again, only time will tell when.
