Drowning in a Pool of SorrowA Story by A.J FitzPassive aggressiveEmily likes to dive into the water. To plunge her body through space and break the surface of the water, forcing herself into another world. A world of silence, where your senses are smothered by a thick watery blanket and gravity no longer exists. Emily tries to stay under the water a little longer each time, until her lungs scream for air. If she can stay just one more moment maybe it will all be over and she can dwell in this world forever. She always gives in and breaks the surface of that other world and the thought disappears like a bubble that rises from below. It started with an argument. It always starts with an argument. Emily walked away she doesn’t want another fight. When she had first walked through the door she had been elated from dive practice. She wanted to share this feeling with him but he doesn’t want to share her joy. Emily is tired, Emily is always tired lately. Patrick follows her upstairs and down again desperate to have an argument, to bend her mood. To make her his again. Patrick traps her in the bathroom and will not let her out. He has drunk too much tonight she can see it in his eyes. His words topple over each other unheard until Emily shouts at him. Her body shakes with rage. Then Patrick steps back and holds up his hands, what’s wrong with you he asks her, as if they were going for a walk in a park. She belongs to him again. Patrick walks back downstairs the T.V blares out some inane programme and Emily flops down on the bed. Emily is dying. Every dream she ever had is ignored and her passing becomes a little closer every day. Soon there will be nothing left of her and she can float in that other world of silence. But Emily is not afraid. She is not the one with fear in her heart. She is not the one that sits alone. Laughter blares out from a game show on the T.V downstairs, for a moment distracting people from their lives. Sometimes the person that sits on their own is not the person that is alone. © 2013 A.J Fitz |
