I am a Burqa or a Hijab or Whatever you call

I am a Burqa or a Hijab or Whatever you call

A Poem by ABDUL WAHAB
"

This is a poem on the burqa or hijab. Many people think burqa is a oppression or a suppression for women. But in reality burqa is saftey for women. It protects women from lustful eyes of men.

"

I am a burqa, a veil people call me by different name

Some call me as hijab others call me a chadaree, abaya, boshiya and we are all the same

I am a protector of women’s honour and dignity

I protect women from the prying and lustful eyes of men and also from indignity.

I am a treasure house or a casket which hides a gem

People attach me to a particular religion and few always ready to condemn

But remember I am not restricted to any one caste or community

Womenfolk belonging to many religions adorn me for immunity.

I can be seen on Muslim, Copts and  Haredi  ladies  in black

I also have a colourful and stylish look and always find some people behind me they yack

In today’s polluted cities and town, girls and women of all ages like to wear me

Damsels put on for health benefits, hygiene and few for reasons which others do not see.

The poor lady who doesn’t have much clothing prefers me a lot

Chaste women who is known to upheld their culture often you find them in this spot

The fairer sex finds me very relaxing and comfortable

For a beholder’s eye I look modest and adorable.

Why do you ban me because of wrongdoings of other?

I am predicted as culprit for failure was yours rather

Why are you scared of my being a mark of religious or community affiliation?

Since the dawn of civilization everyone is having his own way of persuasion.

Let each and every woman decide to wear me or not

Remember in society I am always immaculate but not a blot

Give freedom to those women who wish to spruce up themselves with me

Wherever they may be in this world let them be free.

Dear Abdul, I read with great interest your stanzas in support of the burqa or hijab. I know they have been banned in some parts of the world which I do not agree with. They are not banned in the UK. I am all for freedom of choice and women should choose for themselves what they wish to wear, not because it is driven by their menfolk. My only concern is that completely covering the face, doesn't aid communication. Doesn't allow women from different cultures to be able to communicate and that I feel is important because integration not segregation are key when it comes to living in peace and harmony. Thank you for posting and raising awareness. Best wishes to you always dear poet.
