When Marilyn woke up the next morning her mother was gone. With a yawn, she got out of bed and surveyed the room, which was in a state of chaos. The sheets of her mother’s bed were kicked down to the end. Clothes were strewn across the bed and over the chairs of the round table in the corner. On that table sat a note. In messy scrawl it said:

I am so very sorry for yesterday. Stay in the room and I will be back by dusk.

-Mommy

With a squeal Marilyn rushed to get ready. What a perfect chance to get out! All she needed to do was be back before dusk and her mother would never be the wiser! Ready for some more exploring she ran out the door and made her way to the deck. She wanted to talk to Virgil again, but this time not get caught and dragged away by her mother. That reminded her, she needed to apologize! Once she reached the deck she looked around, hoping to see Virgil against the railing.

She saw no one. With a pout, she turned back and searched for the 3rd class hallway. They seemed hidden from sight and just as Marilyn was going to give up for good she spotted a man and tattered clothes making his way down a path she had yet to try. Even if they didn’t lead to the 3rd class floor they would surely lead toward somewhere better to explore. Without another thought she dashed after him. The man led Marilyn to a hallway. It was similar to the hallway that held the 1st and 2nd class quarters.

Though, this hallway was much hotter and it was not as nice. Plain white wallpaper covered the walls and instead of gold numbers pressed against the door there were numbers painted on in white. The man Marilyn had followed was out of sight now and Marilyn tiptoed down the hallway, occasionally pressing her ear against a door to listen in on a conversation.

“You got away in time?” a voice asked from the other side.

“Yes…” another voice answer. It was familiar. Soon Marilyn heard footsteps heading toward the door and she backed away quickly, searching for a place to hide. Before she could find one the door was thrown open and Virgil stood, grasping the handle, with a boy behind him. Marilyn’s eyes widened and she blushed beet red.

“H-hello…” she mumbled.

Virgil smiled, “Hi, Marilyn. This is my friend, Ollie,” he said gesturing to the boy behind him, “So what are you doing here all alone?”

“Exploring.”

“Cool,” Virgil replied, walking down the hall with Ollie hot on his heels. Marilyn followed.

“What about you two?” she asked.

“None of your business,” Ollie snapped.

Marilyn pouted, “ No need to be so mean…”

“It’s confidential,” Virgil said with a sigh.

“Confi- what?”

“Confidential. Meaning it’s not for spoiled little girls to get into,” Ollie snarled. Marilyn stuck her tongue out at Ollie.

“Fine! I’ll leave,” and with that she turned away and found her way back to her room. She didn’t like Ollie. Not one bit.

Author's Note

A.E. Reed
Woot, woot! Okay, so I, again, introduced a character I had not planned on creating but whatever. Onto a new topic, only ONE more day left! I think the next day will have 3 parts (maybe 2 if I can make em fit) and I'll for sure have, at least, the 1st part up by tomorrow. I'm super excited! It's my first finished book and it sounds so terrible but it's true! XD
