Danesville Asylum

Danesville Asylum

A Story by A.E. Reed
"

People who escape from asylums are dangerous.

"

“He’s escaped,” said one guard grimly as he looked at the monitors before him.

“Who?” asked the other guard.

“Smith.”

“Which Smith, dumbass, there’s about five ‘Smiths’ in this whole asylum,” the second guard snapped looking at the monitors that showed all the rooms at Dansville asylum.

Shooting a glare toward his comrade the first guard pointed toward a particular monitor. “Thomas Smith,” he said. Quickly pushing his chair over the second guard looked at the screen. Sure enough, there was the room, the bed, the food tray, and blankets but no Thomas Smith.

“You’ve got to be shitting me!” he exclaimed, “How the hell could he have gotten out?”

“I wouldn’t be here if I knew,” the first guard said getting out of his chair.

“Don’t get smart with me, Jack.”

“Whatever, Bryan,” walking out the door Jack went to figure out how Thomas could have escaped.

Thomas Smith needed to kill someone, anyone. He wanted it, needed it, craved to kill someone and it was slowly becoming unbearable. That night he was going to make his sweet escape; he had been planning for weeks on how to carefully get out. For weeks he had sat in his room and quietly watched the guards carry out the process of checking on every patient in the asylum.

Every night five guards walked down the hall and checked every room and when they finished they doubled back and locked the doors. Then two would head to the monitor room and the other three would meet up with guards from the other four sectors of the asylum. It was when the guards made sure he was asleep would he sneak out.

Slowly, his door creaked open and a woman walked in. She served him his meals and daily pills, which made him drowsy, for dinnertime. Today, though, he wasn’t going to take his pills.

“Take your pills,” she said to him. It was then that he carefully pushed his fork to the floor and as the nurse bent to pick it up he stashed the pills into his pillowcase and took a sip of water. When she bent up he had just finished swallowing his sip of water.

“Now you can eat,” she turned and walked out of the room. He was lucky that he gained the asylums trust over the years that he had been locked up. Silly fools he thought. After he had finished eating he placed the on his black nightstand and got into his bed. Now it was time to wait.

When 10 o’clock rolled around Thomas Smith was as excited as ever. So excited he could hardly keep still, but he managed. The guard prodded around his room, making sure that Thomas was asleep, and when he was satisfied he left the room leaving it in almost pitch black darkness. Folding his sheets as correctly as he could he quickly placed his tray on his bed and peaked out of a crack in the door. No guards were watching down his side of the hall and Thomas took the chance.

Running past doors he made it to a different hall that had already been checked and ran down it. Look frantically for the exit he flew down flights of stairs and entered and exited various sectors till he finally found the front door. Unable to contain his excitement he opened the door and ran behind a bush.

Moving from bush to bush he could hear the faint sounds of the grasshoppers and owls that surrounded the asylum. When he reached the gate it was easy enough to jump over so he hoisted himself up and hoped over the gate.

“Sweet escape,” he murmured looking at his surroundings. The many overgrown trees that covered the hidden estate looked tangled and knotted together, their leafs rustling softly in the wind. The guard’s cars sat across the sidewalk and Thomas passed through a gap in between two red Jeeps. Beginning his trek to the secluded town of Dansville he smiled and hummed softly to himself.

On candy stripe legs the Spiderman comes

Softly through the shadow of the evening sun

Stealing past the windows of the blissfully dead

Looking for the victim shivering in bed

Searching out fear in the gathering gloom and

Suddenly!

A movement in the corner of the room!

And there is nothing I can do

When I realize with fright

That the Spiderman is having me for dinner tonight!

He sung quietly to himself, the sung that always filled his mind when he was killing, while thinking of how he was going to do what he wanted and whom he was going to do it to. Of course, all the people of Dansville were quite stupid but he wanted a challenge, someone that would definitely not give in easily.

Strolling through the town around midnight he passed as house whose light still seemed to be on.

“Interesting.”

Jack raced the halls telling all of the guards about Thomas’s escape and how he predicted that Thomas was going to kill people in the town.

“Should we tell the people of the town?” asked their newest recruit, AJ.

“No,” said Jack, “if we do then it will be harder to capture Smith and then the town would get riled up and we might lose our jobs.”

“Okay, so who’s going out to look for the crazy f****r?” Bryan asked.

“I’d say me, Bryan, and Jim,” Jack proposed, “everyone else can stay here and keep in contact with us if we need backup.”

There was a chorus of ‘okay’s and the three men were wished luck before their terrible journey.

Peering through the lighted window of the house Thomas Smith saw a teenager and a small little girl. Perfect he thought. They were just the kind of people he was looking for. They would be easy to kill and would most likely be missed a lot.

“Perfect,” he repeated aloud this time. Slowly moving to the back of the house he checked for any other windows. Finding one located in what look like the kitchen of the house Thomas Smith set to unlatching the lock as fast as he could. Once the window was open he sneaked in carefully and closed it.

“Come on Kaylee,” came a voice from the living room. A giggle and soft footsteps could be heard.

“Okay, Jared,” Thomas assumed that the speaker was Kaylee. Looking at the kitchen he was not surprised. They were a middle class family. Their kitchen complete with wood cabinets, granite counters, and the fridge was pushed into a corner. Opening various cabinets he looked for a suitable weapon. Finally, he found a drawer that contained knives and, grabbing the sharpest one he could find, began looking for trash bags.

After he had gathered all that he needed Thomas Smith walked to the entryway of the kitchen. There was a short hall that led to the living room, front door, and a dining room. On the other side was a pair of stairs and a bathroom. Looking up the stairs he saw a long hallway and about 5 doors leading to different rooms.

“Let’s get you to bed okay?” said Jared and Thomas quickly pushed himself into the kitchen again, hiding in a dark corner. Jared paused when he reached the kitchen entryway sure he saw something move.

“Come on!” exclaimed Kaylee jumping in Jared’s arms, “What happened?”

“Nothing,” Jared insisted shaking his head, “Now, you need some sleep.” When his two victims were upstairs Smith exited the kitchen and began prodding around the living room. The family had a couch on one side of the living room, backed against the wall, with the television placed directly across the room and a coffee table littered with various items placed between the two.

After bidding his time for a good thirty minutes he ventured up the stairs and when he was finished he escaped through the window never to be seen again.

“Kaylee Anderson, 5, and Jared Anderson, 15, were found dead in their rooms early this morning when their parents came home after a dinner date. Earlier the press was informed that there was an escaped prisoner form Dansville’s own asylum. Thomas Smith escaped his rooms and people believe that he was the killer of the two children.

But no worries people of Dansville authorities were told that Thomas Smith’s dead body was found amongst sharp tree branches and leaves in the woods a while from here. It’s Emily Jackson with your 10 o’clock news on CDN.”

“Me? Dead? Yeah right,” said a figure in the café before turning around and walking onto the busy street of Skitten, a town nearby Dansville.
