Twenty plus ten years of days long past forgotten
That dust ol’ road has taken him far away
Hard work never paid off, and left him old, and tired
At forty four his body won’t share his pain.
He longs for days of pasts when song filled the air
His grandmothers cookin’ and the taste he used to steal
Fishing in the pond as his Paw Paw cast his line
Chasing the chickens when the rooster gave his call.
Oh how I miss my home
Of days long forgotten
Oh how I miss my home
and the times that we shared
His gift was creations from the old he turned into gold
There is nothing to show for it, but hands scared from wear
Now strangers share his work and that just doesn’t set right
He's got one left in him and this one going home.
He knows it’s a thousand miles in the opposite direction
Passing through the Grand Cayon there's no way to get there, so his legs will have to do
He sets out for the journey-with dog by his side
Determined to get there by the next rise of the full moon.
Now home again he sets as his family starts to gather
Faces he doesn’t recognize, but they all know him well
Tears stream down his face as one by one they hold him
Glad to see he came back home-they whisper in his ear.
Man, woman, child alike they surround him with their love
One in particular she doesn’t release her hold
She cradles him in her arms and strokes his head with care
Lips gently kissing his cheek as tears fill her eyes.
Oh how I miss my home
Of the days long forgotten
Oh how I miss my home
and the times that we shared
Three weeks into his journey the day of the full moon
People in his home town got there news papers that morning
The girl now a woman reads the front page and begins to weep
She recognized the name of the boy she hadn't seen in years.
Head lines of the Morning Star read:
Man Found In Grand Canyon With Dog In Arms
Both Dead From Dehydration.
