An Ode to Grandmother (work-in-progress)

An Ode to Grandmother (work-in-progress)

A Poem by Kaitlin W. Blaylock
"

So, Grams was admitted to the hospital again this morning. I've been more than freaked today. Wrote this at work.

"

Overwhelming Grief

Sadness ocean deep

What am I to do?

Helpless to your pain

Raging inside to do something

Anything but cry

Because to you,

Crying is shame.

In crying for your pain,

I dishonor you.

But these tears spill anyway.

I'm not a doctor

Nor healer am I.

Too selfish to let you go

Worried sick over losing you

Were it mine to choose,

Brief decision time,

I would take your pain

And give my life.

For as the tides and thunders roll,

Essential to Nature,

Your wisdom flows across my mind,

Essential to Me, Myself, and I.

Lessons yet unlearned,

Mean your time is far from done.

So hold tight to your quiet strength

That I may cry no more.

There are a few places where I think the sentence inversion does not wholly work. However, that is really a secondary matter because you really conveyed a deep degree of emotion here. You showed us how you care for your grandmother. You showed us what she taught you. It is clear that her wisdom has guided your life and uplifted your heart and mind. It is also very noble of you to say that you would give your life for her. I had a similar feeling about my own grandmother who suffered from dementia.

I know we would give ourselves for them if we could. The essential thing that I learned after she passed was this--she gave her life and her wisdom so I could carry on the lessons she had to give.

This is a very nice tribute to your grandmother and my heart goes out to both of you. I hope that the two of you have more time to spend together and share the deep bond that you show us here. I know how precious that time is, and how much love one finds during those meetings.
