Epitaph

A Poem by Andrew Hawkins

If you look for me 'mongst the headstones
I wont be hard to find
A simple cross will mark my spot
for those I left behind.

The simple cross is carved upon
and ancient piece of Oak
along with a simple message
that contains these words I spoke

"Shed not for me a single tear,
feel no sorrow for me,
for I shared my life with many trials,
now finally I'm free.

and do not mourn my passing,
from this world to beyond,
for as long as you remember me,
I will ne'er be truly gone""

Maybe, in a quiet, softly-sweetly spoken way, this is how many people feel when they know they are about to die. And remembrance is something extra, special and unnecessary - enough to put a lasting smile on someones face is the knowledge that their exhistance wasn`t in vain, and that memories will fortify and heal those they care for from beyond the grave.

Beautifully dark and daringly occult.

About
While the jury is still out about life beginning at 40 it seems, for me at least, poetry began at 40. Other than the enforced scribblings of a young child I haven't written poetry for thirtysomethi.. more..
