You really don't have to read this poem if

You don't want to.  I mean I won't die or

Anything.  As a matter of fact we're both

Probably better off if you don't read it.

That way I don't have to try to please

You or worry that the poem is lousy or

Whatever and you won't feel obliged to

Tell me how wonderful the poem is especially

If you really can't stand it.  So how about

If we make a sort of agreement...  Like we

Agree that we'll both be happy if you don't

Read it and then we won't have to have any

Concerns about how phony we have to be.  In

Fact it would be better if I didn't write this

Poem at all.  That way you wouldn't have to

Read it and then lie to me about how much

You enjoyed it and I wouldn't have to try to

Please you or impress you... what about that?

D...this one made me laugh all the the way through. It's the way you anticipate failure and try to get the reader to join you in a kind of strange conspiracy to avoid disappointment. Never worked before...doesn't work now...won't work if you try again. For some reason, it reminded of Woody Allen in Annie Hall when he said ...“It reminds me of that old joke- you know, a guy walks into a psychiatrist's office and says, hey doc, my brother's crazy! He thinks he's a chicken. Then the doc says, why don't you turn him in? Then the guy says, I would but I need the eggs. I guess that's how I feel about relationships. They're totally crazy, irrational, and absurd, but we keep going through it because we need the eggs.” Somehow, keep the eggs coming...thanx...bobc
