In uniform present --

Obvious -- their motive --

Earnest -- their intent...

They fail -- tho no encounter --

For puppeteer be wise --

And tired, too, the theater:

No show today...  Surprise!

i can't get my mind around the spirit having guardians

The guardians of the spirit are akin to the defenses of the classical ego. They are at once her protectors and destroyers. They, as do their psychoanalytic counterparts, always fail, regardless of threat. They fail because of their own inadequacy -- not to do the job -- but by virtue of the fact that they took the job in the first place. The spirit needs no guardians -- really -- but her very vulnerability almost demands them. In the end, as with the defended personality, the essence is a 'no show.' There is no surprise. That remark in the poem is cynical. Thank you Ed for reading and reviewing the poem. --David
