It is easy and hard to be yourself for many

Reasons.  Let's start with the easy ones.

First of all you ARE yourself so it comes

Most naturally to be yourself.  Second is

That being yourself means that you don't

Have to pretend you're someone else. But

Here we have to stop and talk about the

First two reasons because they bring up 

Some things that we cannot just ignore.  

The first thing is that if you don't know 

Yourself then you're already in trouble.

You might not want to be yourself because

You can't accept yourself.  You don't want

To see yourself because whenever you have

Seen yourself -- even a little bit -- before,

You've realized that you don't like yourself and

That's a problem.  But we can't talk about

That now because we've run out of space.

Should I have laughed and laughed through this?!?! Seems to be a longggg lateral thinking question with a twist of humour batteneing it together. Are you meaning to bewilder your reader perhaps or just stating the obvious - right to that final line when .. I've just laughed again!

D...is there a difference between feeling self-conscious and being self-aware, do you think? Just curious...bobc

Hey Bob, to me there is a difference. To be self-conscious means that one is judging his social behavior within a group as somewhat lacking or embarrassing, but it has little to do with the actual persona as seen by others. It causes a stilted behavior; one is afraid of rejection. Self-aware usually indicates that an individual is aware of his assets and his flaws. Where as the self-conscious person may be shy and withdrawn, the self-aware person easily falls into the trap of thinkin he is better than others because he is supposedly aware... thus he can become egotistical and even arrogant. That's the way I see it anyway. Thanks yet agan for reading and reviewing... David

I think you've said it well...the former is judgemental to a large extent. But, IMO, the latter, is not. I guess we'll have to disagree about this. I think 'being yourself' is just being self-aware...without the baggage of judgement going in any direction. Keep at it...always worth the read...bobc

An analysis of self...the voice in this one...the back and forth to oneself...the idea that one knows who they are...can be problematic...yet do you know for sure...this would be go to read in front of the mirror to see your response as one says the words...

I'm 62 years old. I think that when a person gets to be my age, and if he's an honest person, then he will know who he is... at least that's the way it is for me. I do know many people who are as old as I am who don't know themselves at all. So there just went my theory, what? Hope your self is well and thanks for reading the poem and commenting on it...
