Early morning -- time to write --

Early morning -- time to write --

A Poem by Firestone Feinberg

Early morning -- time to write --
To leave the canyons of the night
Unto the monsters met in dream --
That they might settle into sleep

And keep to themselves as you mind
The dawning day -- now yours -- behold!
What chance await?  What thing to find?
What tales to tell -- and to be told

To you -- that you might write them down
Upon a leaf of paper new --
That all your words be right and true
Before the night again come round.

"Upon a leaf of paper new --" yes I like the way one line can hold all the thought to your page.

Thank you so much! You make me smile. So glad you enjoyed it. David
The poem is like a warning from a nursery rhyme, 'Now listen children, use your day time to record the tales that have been told to you at night. And hurry up, before it gets dark!' It is darker than the Vincent Price narrative which introduces Michael Jackson's Thriller, lighter than the William Blake of Tyger Tyger. There are lots of interesting deviations from the standard nursery rhyme. The 'To you' at the beginning of the third stanza almost jumps out at the reader. We would have expected the sentence to finish on the previous line. Effects such as this combined with the self mocking Grand Guignol tone set by a phrase like 'the dawning day' and the irregular rhyming pattern are enough to unsettle both children and sensitive adults.
