It's been hot here for weeks

A Poem by Firestone Feinberg

It's been hot for weeks -- hot and humid here
In New York.  But I have been cold for years -- cold
And confused.  The weather has little effect on
Me.  The temperature has nothing to do with
Reality... It's a measure of something -- I'm sure it
Is -- but there's no thermometer for anything that
Means anything.  I mean, the weather is outside, but
It's also inside.  You know what I mean...  No one

Really knows if it's raining inside you.  No one
Really cares if thunderstorms are inside you -- or
If lightning strikes inside you.  It's not important if
There's a jungle in you -- or an iceberg or even
A volcano.  I know that it's hot and humid in New
York.  But there are other places where weather is.

This made me extremely happy. haha I love this! I love the way you approached the idea! I love the conversational nature of it! No one gives much consideration to our inner weather. lol imagine if the news reported on that! lol would probably take forever. We'd also have some pretty interesting turbulent weather going on. I can recall tsunami's and volcanoes going off inside of me at times O_O

I like the righteous anger of this piece. Would only more people stood up for the inner life of thoughts and feelings... Reading and writing take us away from the rough externals, the dreary round of cause and effect, and the endless weather/political/gossip/ reports that have, only for few of us, a truly personal meaning. The words look as if they've been put down so casually, but look at where the emphasis falls: at the end of the first stanza after 'no one' makes the words that follow almost shout at us; in the penultimate line, the break puts the new back into 'New York'; and the awkward structure of the final sentence makes us want to finish it with our own ideas of what constitutes 'other places'.
