Another bird is happiness -- 

Who goes a different way -- 

Her destination -- none can guess -- 

Nor motivation -- say --

A visitor from heaven she -- 

To capture -- do not try -- 

Her spirit need forever be

The essential message is that without freedom there is no happiness and that it is particular to each individual. Very pithily put in this poem. Those dashes do help to convey the rhythm of the piece.

I certainly value your special view: it always makes me see something new. Those dashes are, indeed, something like 'rests' in music. They are as much about rhythm as they are about punctuation. I have always used lots of dashes -- much to the annoyance of my English teachers. It was my mentor, Emily Dickinson, who gave me license to dash away. Thanks again. Hope all is well. --David
