Chapter II
Legends Tim sat down quietly at his kitchen table. The memory of school today was a blur. It was exactly 5:08 and he was anxious to get out of the house. His parents gracefully walked down the stairs in the same clothes they greeted him with this morning. “Timothy.” His mother sat down next to him and his father in front. “Yes mother.” “I want you to understand our rules.” She was speaking too soft, too innocent. “Yeah, yeah, yeah, no beer, no sex, I know!” “Thats not it.” His father pitched in. “I want you to be safe.” “What could possibly go wrong at a Lake house in the woods?” Tim smiled at his stupid statement. “Please.” His mother begged. “I will give you 50 dollars, no need for my card. Just don’t spend it on booze.” “Of course not.” Tim slouched in his chair and looked at the clock. 5:10 “And no sex! I will have you tested after spring break if I have to.” His father crossed his hands “Yes father.” Tim sat back up and copied his fathers body language. He crossed his arms and did a half smile. “And if you do have sex, be safe.” His mothers voice went up high. Tim put his hands over his ears. “Lalala!” He tried to block out the sound of Veronica pregnant, the thought of him paying child support, and his child growing inside of her. “Little Timmy is growing up.” His father patted him on the back. “Yeah thanks dad.” Tim moaned as he dragged his body up stairs into his room. His room was still messy, but that only made him feel more of himself. He jumped on his bed and closed his eyes. There were a few things that could possibly go wrong tonight. One being Rod has this break down. Two- his thoughts were interrupted by his mothers voice. “Tim get the phone!” She yelled. Tim moaned as he walked over to the phone on his dresser. “Hello?” He sighed. “Good your on-” Then his mother hung up. “Talk to me.” “Tim? Tim is this you?” It was Rods’ mother. Tim's heart skipped a beat. “Yeah what happened!” “Rod was in a car accident! He fell asleep at the wheel.” “Oh my gosh is he okay?” Tim’s mother cut on her line. “Yeah he's fine. I don’t think he can be able to go tonight.” “Yes I can mom!” Tim heard Rod’s anxious voice in the background. “Tim can drive me.” “Honey you feel asleep at the wheel!” “And I only hit a tree. I’m fine!” “I could drive him.” Tim said. “I think he's a bit to tired.” Rod’s mother tried to sound happy, ignoring her son yelling in the background. “Its a sleepover in the school! Tired, then I go to bed there! I can’t live in the freaking house anymore!” Then there was a big slam. “Oh Rod!” His mother hung up the phone. It was moments of silence between Tim and his mother before his mother finally said something. “Get off the phone stupid.” Then Tim hung up, jumped on his bed and continued to dream. He finally re-opened his eyes at exactly 6:00. Veronica was breathing over him heavily. Her smell of roses filled the air. He grabbed her waist and threw her under him. “How did you get in?” He tried making his voice as seductive as possible. “The front door. Your mom let me in. What happened with Rod?” “How did you find out?” “Rod’s mom called Richie who called Alan who called Steve who called Liz who called me.” “Wow. Words gets around fast.” Tim smiled and began kissing Veronica. “No.” She pulled away. “I came because I’m picking you up, remember?” “Eh- can’t. I kinda promised to take Rod.” “I can take Rod too.” “Yeah but-...” Tim tried to make an excuse, he didn’t want his girlfriend driving him. It would make him seem unmasculine. “Please” She begged. “Fine.” Tim jumped off his bed and grabbed a pare of sweatpants and his favorite white shirt. “Lets go!” Veronica jumped up and rushed outside. Tim slowly crept down the stairs. His mother and father were watching the 1950’s Titanic and snuggled on the couch. The lights were off and popcorn was the only thing Tim could smell. He rolled his eyes as he and Veronica slowly snuck out the house. “Finally!” Tim ran over to Veronica’s 1979 Volvo wagon. “I am excited.” Veronica jumped in the drivers side as Tim jumped in the passenger. “Ya’know where he lives right?” “Of course. Richie, Alan and Steve should be at Liz’s house already.” She drove out of the driveway. “The sleepover starts at 8 and ends at 10 tomorrow. we meet about 9:30, get some breakfast, chill at my house, 12:00 get some lunch, then at about 7:00 that night we leave for the Lake House.” “Why that late?” “Because when the sun sets its more romantic for some of the things Rod and I have planned for you and Liz.” “What about Richie and Alan.” Veronica laughed. “They can love each other.” Veronica laughed again. "Is Steve bringing that girl he obsessed with? He mentioned her before I went to get you." "What do you mean?" Tim looked at Veronica. “What girl?” "Ya'know, to the sleepover." "You mean his lab partner Tammy Harrington?" “Yeah Tammy! I don’t like her.” Veronica and Tim laughed. “Yeah... more annoying than Liz.” “We all hate Liz!” They pulled up to a two story brick house. The trees were covering the entrance as a gate opened slowly with the sight of their car. "Steve's coming to the house first, right." "Of course." Veronica stopped at the opening of the gate. “Let’s get out.” She unlocked the door then they both jumped out of the car. "Steve wanted Tammy to come to the lake house with us but she said she couldn't." Tim sighed. "That’s okay." Veronica chuckled "True, but Steve plans to have sex with her during the sleepover." "That’s nice to know." Veronica smiled at Tim as they walked “Like what Rod and I have planned.” Tim whispered that last part then looked at Veronica as they both walked up to the buzzer at the gate. “Gosh rich people.” “I know right!” Veronica rolled her eyes. “Did his mom say yes to this?” “Well I’m not sure... but he did. I’m not even sure he’s home.” “Hello.” It was Rods’ mothers voice coming through the speaker attached to the buzzer. “Oh hello Mrs. Evans.” Veronica’s voice changed to preppy and high. “Veronica is that you darling? Oh my gosh!” The gate opened all the way. “Please come in!” Veronica shrugged and Tim followed her into the Gates. The lawn was perfect cut with red roses by the front door. The path was tile with a spotted pattern. Veronica made it to the front door. His door was glass and Rod was leaning against the door. “Hey bro.” Tim opened the door and Rod slowly walked out, bypassing Veronica and Tim. “Bye honey!” His mother screamed from inside. “Go away!” Rod yelled then ran through the gates. “We will take good care of him Mrs. Evans.” Tim reassured. “And don’t worry- he won’t talk to my mom like that. She will beat his a*s.” Veronica laughed as she closed the door. Back in the car Rod claimed the passenger side as Veronica jumped in the drivers and Tim got in the back seat. Everyone closed their doors and Veronica began to drive. “So what’s going on Rod?” Tim broke the short silence. “Nothing.” Rod leaned his head against the window. “Come on man.” Tim leaned in the center of the car and looked at Rod. “Nothing is happening!” Rod screamed. “Nothing is freaking happening!” A tear ran down Rods’ cheek. “Is Liz prego or something?” Veronica smiled. “No, nothing.” “Then what!” Tim yelled back. “Nothing is f*****g happening leave me the freak alone!” Rod jumped out of his seat and turned towards Tim. “Stop the car Veronica.” “What?” Veronica looked at Rod. “Stop the f*****g car!” Tim screamed at her as she hit the brakes. They stopped in the middle of an abandoned dirt road. “Get the hell out Rod. You want me to leave you alone then you can just get out!” “Fine a*****e.” “Rod no. We’re almost at Liz’s let’s just please take this to her house.” Veronica begged. Rod turned his head to look out the window. “Did you see that?” Rod looked back at Tim, eyes big. “What?” Tim touched Rods shoulder. “I just swore I saw a shadow move- but I don’t know.” “Yeah. Me too.” Veronica’s voice got shallow. “We need to get out of here.” The sun was beginning to set, and shadows were the only thing they could see. “What did the shadow look like?” Veronica began driving again as Tim asked Rod. “It was dark- and it was holding a knife.” Veronica responded. A crow began to crow. “I’m scared.” Rod looked at Tim. “Sorry guys. My parents are getting divorced and it’s hard for me right now.” “It’s okay bro. Sorry I yelled at you.” Tim looked down then back up. “This shortcut is beginning to scare me too. And why are you parents getting divorced?” “Money I guess. I don’t know. But my sister Michelle and I are scared. Losing my father will be horrible.” “I am so sorry.” Veronica finally made it back to civilization and pulled up to Liz’s mansion. “Let’s get in the house.” Tim leaned back in the seat. Tim, Veronica and Rod slowly got out of the car and walked towards the door. They rung the doorbell and Liz opened the door. "Hey guys." Liz smiled. "Hey Liz." Tim and Veronica faked a smile and walked inside. "Rod, sweetie, are you sure you're okay?" Liz sounded concerned. "Yeah babe, thinking of you helped me get better. Rod kissed Liz on the cheek then quickly looked at Tim. The inside of the house was painted golden yellow. The furniture was covered in plastic and the sun beamed from the windows surrounding the living room. There was various pictures of Liz's family members on the walls. The rest of the gang were sitting down eating chocolate chip cookies. "You're so adorable!" Liz starting jumping up and down again as Veronica and Tim rolled their eyes, sitting next to Richie and Steve. "I love when you do that." Rod quickly picked up Liz and brought her inside, kicking the door closed. Rod carried Liz over to the living room where everyone else was. "Steve, talk to me about Tammy again." Tim poke casually. "Easy, we're gonna sneak away from the rest of you guys after about 30 minutes of hanging out and then we're gonna go to the theater where we're gonna make out before I screw the f**k outta her. Steve made a very big grin "Sounds nice bro, but why not something more romantic like what Rod and I have planned for Veronica and Liz." "What do you have planned?" Liz asked, taking a bite of a cookie. "Can't say, but it's good." Rod smiled. "I don't know man, but it's gonna be great." Steve looked back at Tim. "Does she know you're gonna screw her?" Veronica laughed. "Yeah, in science today, we were about to mix chemicals and Tammy says that she thinks I'm cute, so I tell her she's sexy and she changes the subject by telling me she's horny and I'm just staring at her amazing tits before I ask her if she is going to the sleepover and she says that she'll be there." Steve grinned again. "Nice man." Tim highfived Steve. “So I said I have legends to tell you and I will tell you them.” Rod spoke casually. “I thought I was gonna tell them.” Alan laughed. “I know em better.” Rod smiled. “Tell me!” Liz jumped up and down. “Earthquake!” Richie screamed and closed his ears and everyone but Rod and Liz laughed. Liz pouted and walked into the kitchen. “She will miss the legends.” Rod said in a funny voice. “Go on!” Veronica said. “Once there was a kid named Alan Crandall.” “Crandall?” Steve interrupted. “That is a funny last name.” “Ha yeah! And let’s not mention his first name... Alan.” Everyone giggled at Richie's immature statement. Liz walked back into the kitchen with a salad and fruit. “Anyways. Alan Crandall was this chill kid- I mean like really chill. But he kinda-sorta had a secret.” “What was it?” Liz asked. “I’m getting there... He went to Franklin Pierce High School. Just like all of us. But one day he went in and never went out.” Richie made ‘oos and ahh’ sounds. “They found his body in a chemical waste basket. The custodians smelled rotting body and they found him- burned alive.” “Who killed him?” “No one knows. They think it’s an act of suicide.” “What was his secret.” “No one knows that ether. On his hands was written ‘I have a secret to tell’.” “Not true. No way this is true...” Liz pulled out a big box from under the couch and looked through the articles. “Are you seriously looking this up?” Rod laughed. “Go ahead. You’ll find old pictures of his body. This was back in 1952.” Steve’s smile dropped as he showed everyone pictures and news articles of Alan Crandall that he brought from home. “How do you know this?” Tim took a bite out a cookie. “Everyone knows about him. And they think he's coming back to avenge his murder, because he didn't kill himself. Or so they say.” “Wicked!.” Veronica laughed. “We need to check this out.” Alan whispered. “Just like that shadow we saw on the way here, we can go back in these woods.” Veronica suggested. “We are all going to die!” Liz screamed. “Oh here we go again.” Tim rolled his eyes. “We are not the Scooby-Doo gang or the Jabberjaw clan.” Liz rolled her eyes. “I mean I am eager too but I don’t- it’s too late- I mean we can do this when school returns.” “Fun- Fun!” Richie clapped his hands. “I say we go now. The sleepover begins shortly and we could try to find clues while Steve and Tammy get it on..” “And anything that happens will be on cameras, surveillance around the school.” Veronica smiled. "Who cares?" Steve smiled also. “Another reason we should not go!” Liz yelled. “The sleepover tonight is just going to be scary.” “It’s just a legend, Liz!” Tim yelled. “Chill out.” “Yeah babe. Its only just a legend.” Then Rod put his arms around Liz, and everything got silent. © 2012 Alex Hunter |
