Floating Down A Road

Floating Down A Road

A Poem by Alexander Emberson
"

True story.

"

The dead cat floated down the road unaware of the looks it was receiving.

It seemed to draw more attention than it did when it was a stray:
A cold gangly product of society;
its wet fur glistened in the headlights of passing cars.
The dead cat’s stomach was full of blood and the rib that did it in.
The stray thought back to the warm hands of the ones that took it in.
The genuine smiles of college students thankful for
the relief it brought them.
And behind their stern cold eyes the stray saw itself.
Then it floated towards a sewer drain; faster and faster it sped
as the crisp water washed more of the dirt and grime from its fur
and prepared it for a watery grave like a drowning sailor.
Just before being taken in by the black void of the sewer
the dead cat flopped over a branch and its eyes gleaned
the faces of the students that smiled at it.

Eerie. Dark and yet....reality is like that, all of that. Striking descriptives. Haunting imagery.
