Part 1

Part 1

A Chapter by Kat-Marie Berti

It was getting dark; the sun having vanished from the horizon nearly an hour ago and I was walking down Crook Street at a rather fast pace. I turned right at the intersection and cut between two cars parked by the curb, before continuing onto Rome Avenue. I was slightly jumpy with every shadow that moved before me and fingered the switchblade hiding in my coat pocket nervously. Ever since one of the members of the G.D’s had gotten jumped and beaten to pulp by a rival gang the previous week, I had decided to carry my blade with me at all times. I had no desire to have a taste of what Nicholas Stacey had gone through that horrid night. I was positive that the assault had been from the Devil’s Order, probably a hit-man from Heath himself. Heath Mcroy, the leader of the Devil’s Order was one of the most dangerous men to walk this city. He and his 84 gang members were responsible for conducting and monitoring all drug activity here in the North Shore of Illinois. They bought and sold almost 84% of the city’s cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, opium, lsd and ecstasy.

I passed by the boutique “Sex Dream”; noticing the busty blonde in front, dressed in a jean mini-skirt and leaning into a sports car, chatting with one of her usual clients. Another woman in glittery white spandex shorts and a matching tube top was casually smoking by the entrance of the store, peering at her reflection in the large window with one hand on her hip. The boutique’s neon sign flashed blue and pink into the night.

I sped up to the next street to the left and sighed with relief as the duplex on top of Cherry Drive loomed up at me. I could see that the light was on upstairs and knew that someone was home, probably watching TV or taking a nap. I pulled out my keys from my jean pocket as I neared the front door and undid the lock before letting myself into the dark entrance. I closed the door behind myself and made sure that the bolt was back in place. I accidentally tripped over a loose pair of sneakers as I shrugged off my coat and hung it in the closet by the front door. The TV was on upstairs; I could hear the slow drone of the evening news seeping down the stairs from the open door of someone’s bedroom.
