What the hell were you thinking?

What the hell were you thinking?

A Poem by Kat-Marie Berti

I stood by the blue, blue pool

Trying to act and look real cool

Pushing sunglasses up over my eyes

Not caring if the world passed me by

You saw straight through this version of me

Laughed out loud at who I wanted to be

Came real close to where I was standing

And asked me “What the hell were you thinking?”

Okay, you’re right, I really screwed up

I shouldn’t have broken your mother’s cup

It was a mistake; I’ll buy her another one

This argument is over, chill out, you’ve won

I just wanted to make her some tea

To show her who I am for real, to see

Prove to her that I am worthy of her son

You just wait and see, she’ll tell me “You’re done”

I’m getting banana sandwich about all this

If she tells me to leave, it’s only you I’ll miss

It’s all a big misunderstanding, let’s move on

I won’t mess up the tea no more or else I’m gone

The joys of meeting the in-laws for the first time. Moments filled with anxiety, whether they will accept you for who you are. Coming from a huge extended family, it was like running the gauntlet. You captured these emotions perfectly in this poem. Thank you for sharing this poem with us.

Awe...who hasn't done this at one time or another? I have had a zillion things broken in my house by both my kids AND me. I seem to be the world's worse. Well, they are just that-THINGS. Things can be replaced. People can't. I love your down to earth writes. Thank you...:-)

this makes me sad...indeed a bit of negative sided feelings.....yeah i agree it happens, they won't take you as real....however even we do think the same on the first go. ha!

Wonderful poem about "trying to be accepted" by another's family. :) I like the rhythm and flow that you give this poem.

Aww... I hate meeting the parents for the first time too! It stinks. You know that no matter what you do, they won't think you're good enough, but they still expect you to try.And so you do. But everything always goes wrong. If you're lucky, you'll avoid a serious faux pas. More likely, you'll do something completely embarrassing; if you're lucky, they'll only tease you for a few years. Thanks for sharing.

The angst of acceptance, and the yearning, sweaty palms of not knowing if you shall like them, or be liked in return. The poem brings me back. Good job!

I really like this :) Very catchy and a little non-sensical in a good way. Very much a lyrical aspect to it and I could definately see this becoming a very catchy song... just add a really awsome sound and you'd have a hit!! LOL! Good job!
