Mother Nature BleedsA Poem by Devayani ReddiPale is the moon and dark is the night My heavenly children-the stars-once shone bright But now an unearthly fog hides them from sight And not a single soul listens to their plight. In my beloved forests nightingales would sing In answer to their call birds could rest a wing But now my tress have fallen to Man’s greed I am Mother Nature and I bleed, I bleed. My children, alas, have no place to stay They become more frightened with each passing day Knowing full well my arms have been flayed And I can offer them no solace no matter what they say My poor children alternately swelter and shiver Oh when will Man run out of arrows for his quiver? Spare me and my children, I plead I am Mother Nature and I bleed, I bleed. Everyday the oceans scream, “Mother we are choking!” My eyes tear up as I behold big and little fishes dying Red run my rivers, they’ve run out of water even for crying They cannot fight human filth hell-bent on drying. “Run, my children, run!” again and again I reiterate “Where shall we go, Mother?”- They’re desperate Helpless, I look upon Man’s dastardly deed I am Mother Nature and I bleed, I bleed. Man is a monster, endlessly encroaching upon me “Have you no soul, beast? I’m dying can’t you see?” He only laughs, paying no heed to my plea And tells me to be slaughtered had always been my destiny. Gather round sons and daughters, blood red is my vision To see the light leave our eyes is Man’s only mission One last time I will kiss you all to sleep I am Mother Nature and I bleed, I bleed. © 2014 Devayani ReddiReviews
