Run

Run

A Poem by Faust

They told us to run.
So that's what I did.
I ran.
I could hear students running into lockers.
I could hear the sound of my racing heart in my head.
I could hear police clearing out classrooms.
I could see the door.
I was so close to the door.
I wasn't thinking.
I tried to jump down the stairs.
I tripped.
Someone grabbed me and I grabbed someone else.
Us three ran out the doors.
I could see teachers running with students all scattered heading in different directions across the parking lot to the road.
We didn't look, we just crossed.
We weren't thinking, we just had to get away.
Police cars were everywhere.
Coming up the road, parked in front the school.
We ran to a house, others to the middle school.
We were safe.
