Understanding the world that is safe in a child's eyes

Understanding the world that is safe in a child's eyes

A Poem by Faust

I was a child when it happened.
I didn't yet understand how the world worked.
I didn't yet know that there are bad people who walk these streets.
I thought he could be trusted.
I remember walking with my mom.
Her back was turned just for a moment to talk to the person behind the counter in our local store.
I remember making eye contact with a guy who had his hand outstretched to me.
I remember slipping my little hand into his far bigger hand and he squeezed.
It felt warm and unfamiliar.
He started leading me away.
Away from my mom who chose that moment to turn around only to scream.
I have never heard a noise so loud and it scared me.
I remember crying.
The guy let go and ran.
I remember my mom holding me tight that night, and told me that I wasn't allowed to go with anyone who wasn't mommy or daddy.
This was a wake up for me.
I had the mindset of a child in my 4 year old body.
I was innocent.
I was trusting.
I was almost lost because of those facts.

Of such occurrences is PTSD born. This one sounds like a very close call.
