Jesus' Mission

Jesus' Mission

A Story by Loretta Edwards

Jesus’ Mission

Do you remember the old TV series “Mission Impossible”? You probably think that when God briefed Jesus about his assignment on earth that it went something like this: “I have a lot of sinners on earth that I don’t know how to deal with. After a lot of thought I have come up with a plan. I am sending you to earth. You can get their attention-tell some stories; heal the sick; throw in a few miracles…like…O maybe, change water into wine, walk on water; whatever comes to mind. The downside is you will have to take their sins on your shoulders, shed your blood and die on the cross. That way I will have an excuse to forgive them. Don’t worry though I’ll see to it that you arise from the grave and you will be a hero.”

I imagine it entirely different. I think it went like this: “Son, your brothers and sisters on earth are sinning. Many don’t know they are sinners because they have been lied to and led astray by the ones in authority that they trust. You know Me the best. So, I am asking you to go to earth as a human being to teach them the Truth about Me. Should you accept this mission, I want to warn you, it won’t be easy!

“I have selected Mary to be your mother. Earthlings have forgotten that I alone give Life and many will not be able to accept the idea of a virgin birth. They will smirk and make nasty remarks about Mary not being a married woman when you were conceived.

“Then there is the problem of worship. Many of the pagan ceremonies and rituals have become so entwined in the church service that they won’t understand when you ignore some of their foolish religious laws. They will truly believe you are the sinner. They will be afraid of you because some of their most cherished beliefs will be shattered.

“The leaders will make trouble for you! They won’t like you telling the people How Much I Love Them. Those in authority make their living off the backs of the people. They need to keep the people ignorant and obedient. You will make my children strong and happy.

“People want to be healthy, so healing will be the easy part. You know I never send sickness, disease or death to anyone. You bring their thought up to the point where they also know that their sickness is an illusion and the error (belief in a lie or a false sense of things) has to disappear.

If you decide to accept this mission I will give you twelve good men to help you now and to continue to teach after you leave. Although, one will be so consumed with the amount of money and how it is spent, that it will cloud his judgment.

“Know that I will be with you every step of the way. I will not forsake you at any time!”

Jesus accepted the challenge. He came. He saw. He conquered. And what have we done? For 2000 years we have left Jesus nailed to that cross. For too long we have considered His promises too good to be taken seriously. We have built bigger and more beautiful church buildings and taken healing out of the church service.

How disappointed Jesus must be in our modern spiritually ignorant society.
