Discipline

           

            Everyone has their own way to keep order in their home. We all know there are parents that don’t protect or value their children. If you have raised a child even one that is usually obedient, or only baby-sit occasionally, you know that each child needs a little discipline…often.

            How do you discipline your kids? Do you hold their hand on the hot burner of your kitchen stove to teach them what ‘hot’ means? Do you lock them in the dark closet because you want them to understand that there is nothing in the dark to fear? Do you toss them in the deep end of the pool so that they will learn to swim in a hurry?

            Do these discipline tactics sound extreme? Maybe cruel? And NO, you would never consider doing anything like that to your kids. If, you ever saw or even suspected you knew of such monstrous behavior, you would report the parents to the authorities without a seconds hesitation. You, being of sound mind, treat your family with kindness, respect and lots of love.

            Then How??? How can you possibility accuse God, our Loving Father, of sending your sickness, your poverty, your trials and troubles? You wouldn’t do this to your child!! Yet, you have no probable believing God has done it to You!

            You as a human parent would never think of heaping such horrible, unnecessary, misfortunes on the child that you love. Are you saying that you know better then God how to treat people in general and children in particular? That if you had it in your power to make people healthy and happy…you would…but God won’t?

            Why won’t God? Is He too busy? Unconcerned? Uninterested? Too tired? Isn’t able? Or just plain doesn’t care?

            If none of the above fit, then what is the excuse for the ‘punishment’ in human affairs? The devil maybe? OK Let’s say God is too Good and Kind to send disasters to us. Would God, Could God, Create an evil or Satan? His direct opposite, to do the ‘dirty work’ that God can’t bring Himself to deliver? Was the devil created to torture and punish us for our sins? I hardly think so! A loving Father would not knowingly place is in harms way.

            Maybe evil is self-created? Maybe. If you can figure out where there would be a place for anything unlike God, when God fills all time and all space with Good. So, is there any reality to the devil? Even if somehow the devil had become, even if the devil somehow had power, even if that power were used to harass, torment and corrupt, you have no need to fear. What God did not create does not exist. You can’t be influenced or harmed by anything that does not exist.

            What I believe is that God does Not discipline. At the beginning of the world, He made Laws to govern the world and humanity. Each Law has a meaning and a purpose and are still in effect.

            You can obey the Law and be blessed with enormous prosperity, excellent health and ecstatic happiness. Or…You can flaunt the Law and suffer the consequences.

            This is the way that God disciplines, by allowing you to discipline yourself.
